Explore a Range of Indigo Hues on Different Fabrics

Different fabrics will take the dye in a range of hues from green to turquoise. How awesome is that!

This one-day workshop will introduce you to different methods of dyeing with Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) and how to extract the pigment from the leaves for future use.
Japanese indigo has certain enzymes within it that enable us to use it fresh, without needing a vat to reduce it. These methods produce unique turquoise blues on protein fibres. We will explore different techniques to develop patterns and colours on silk and wool.
In addition, Julie will show you how easy it is to make a small vat for dyeing cellulose fibres and fabrics. This workshop is perfect for those growing their own Persicaria but need the next step with guidance. As part of the workshop, you will go home with dyed samples, a silk scarf, and some stems of Persicaria to start growing at home.
Please note: Parts of this workshop will be conducted outdoors. This workshop can only be offered annually in the growing season—summer to early autumn.
