Quick Book Making Workshop

Make your own book in just one lesson.

1.5 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests

  $48 (Afterpay available)

In this quick book-making workshop, you will learn the principles of one bookbinding method - Coptic binding. This ancient technique was used for the very first Gospels when books transitioned from scrolls to codexes: those with folded pages. By the end of the class, you will create your own Coptic-bound book to take home, perfect for drawing, paintings, or diary notes.
  • All necessary materials will be provided, including plain cartridge paper suitable for drawing and painting, and covers that can be decorated later.
  • If there is time, you will also learn a simple binding method for single-folded paper that can be applied to all sorts of book types. Examples of these will be on hand to page through.
Don't worry if you're a beginner; this workshop is designed to guide you through the bookbinding process step by step. Working with your hands and seeing a finished book take shape can be a rewarding and calming experience. At the end of the workshop, you'll not only have new bookbinding skills but also a handmade book to cherish and organise your creations at home.

I am an architect and I learned Calligraphy in school. Becoming a member of the WA Calligraphers' Guild revived this skill and I extended my interest in lettering into cutout forms and folded card structures. I have contributed several articles to the American magazine Bound & Lettered and have learned from visiting Calligraphers from the US and UK. My works have been sold at the Between the Sheets book exhibition which takes place every two years and is at the TAFE gallery in Perth again this August.
