Join Bad Writers Club for a memoir writing class with Nova Weetman at the Chestnut Tree Bookshop in Melbourne!
Writing about your life can feel both awkward and empowering. And sometimes, it’s difficult to wade through a lifetime of experiences and pick moments that can form a narrative.
In this two-hour workshop, author Nova Weetman (memoir Love, Death & Other Scenes) will teach you how to look at yourself as a character, how to flesh out moments in your life that you would like to write about, and how to craft them into short-form personal narratives.
The workshop will also touch on the ethics of memory in memoir and who owns the story. And there will be plenty of time to ask Nova questions about memoir writing.
Nova will use her own life-writing examples for The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald to teach what she thinks works best when connecting with a reader and how to use dialogue, tense and structure in short form memoir. Perfect for writers at all stages.

  • 5/5 from Sami Cobb, attended Feb 2026: An absolute joy! The Chestnut Tree Bookshop is the perfect setting for a writing workshop, so cosy and inviting. I’d definitely recommend arriving early for a browse of the books and little treasures before settling in. Nova is a superb facilitator, with a finely tuned instinct for when to guide and when to step back and let the group focus on writing. The exercises were varied and well-paced, always thoughtfully introduced and supported. The feedback from both Nova and Donita on the piece I chose to share with the group truly elevated it, bringing it more vividly to life through comments that were specific, perceptive and encouraging in all the right ways. Add a warm, friendly group, plus wine and nibbles, and it was the ideal creative escape. I had the best time and only wished it had been longer!

  • 5/5 from Rachel Humphrys, attended Oct 2024: This workshop, taught by Nova Weetman, was a delightful evening! It was just the right blend of teaching (sharing writing examples and experience, as well as genuinely useful exercises), and time to experiment with the exercises (and share, if one felt so inclined) in an entirely unpressured way. The Bad Writers Club is a fantastic host - so welcoming, and providing an abundance of snacks and drinks to keep everyone fuelled for the evening. Oh, and The Chestnut Tree Bookshop & Cafe is a really lovely venue (and excellent bookstore).

Ridiculously fun
Unashamedly lowbrow

BWC was born out of a desire to write with freedom and wild abandon … to write and create with no limitations, judgement, or self-imposed barriers.
We all have the right to suck … in fact, we MUST suck on the way to becoming GOOD!
It takes bravery to keep going when it feels like everything that comes out is utter rubbish … but there’s a reason we call it a writing PRACTICE.
Good writing comes with time and repetition, but it can be a really hard and lonely experience, so we created BWC.
A place for all kinds of writers to be together, try things, make mistakes, learn stuff, and have a massive amount of fun in the process.
BWC is more than a writing club. It’s a place to suck in safety, while growing, stretching yourself to be better, and surrounding yourself with folks who get it.
