Make a Lidded Slab Box Workshop

Hand-build a slab box with lid

8 hours total (over 2 dates) Class size 1 to 4 guests

  $250 (Afterpay available)

I am Sarah and a full-time ceramicist. I have a home studio located in the beautiful village of Emerald, on the boundary of Emerald Lake Park, in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, the home of Puffing Billy.
I offer small group, hand-building classes for all levels of clay enthusiasts, where you can explore texture, technique, and artistic expression in a relaxed, bushland setting. This workshop will introduce you to making and glazing a 4-sided slab-built box with a lid.
I have been studying and teaching pottery since 2019. My focus is on teaching hand-building of sculptural and functional ware in a supportive and encouraging environment.
I would welcome the opportunity to teach you while sharing the incredibly inspiring environment that my studio is in.
With a class maximum of 4 people, you will expand on your beginner’s skills to explore the different techniques used for developing, designing, and building a slab box. You will have an opportunity to explore the use of a slab roller, rolling guides, rolling pins, and/or kidney tools to roll a perfect slab every time which is the foundation for your lidded box.
This is a two-day workshop:
  • Day 1: Slab building
  • Day 2: Glazing
You will further explore joining seams using a bevel cutting tool, scratching tools, slip, and coils for fail-proof joins (most of the time).
Session 2 will be either 1 or 2 weeks later, same venue, day & time
Glazed boxes will be fired and ready for pick up two weeks later. Please note, due to their size, boxes cannot be mailed without prior discussion.
