On the search for unique Adelaide activities? Join Rehana Usman in Adelaide and discover how to make a gorgeous Indonesian Batik!
Indonesian batik has been titled the Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Your teacher, Rehana, has spent months at the National Batik Museum Jakarta to learn this beautiful art.
Bring a friend along or come solo to learn this beautiful and relaxing art. It may sound challenging, but you'll be guided by Rehana step-by-step to finish your very own batik scarf or table runner. You'll learn to use special batik tool Tjanting and brushwork to make beeswax resist method textile print.

  • 5/5 from Haidee Crawford, attended May 2026: The class was both informative and enjoyable and was conducted in a relaxed manner. I would recommend this class for anyone interested in different methods of fabric dying.
  • 5/5 from Linda Slater, attended Apr 2026: Thoroughly enjoyed our Indonesian batik class. Rehana who was our instructor, was so lovely and friendly. All our pieces turned out different but so gorgeous. I would definitely recommend for everyone to go and do. We are already planning on doing it again.
  • 5/5 from Lindsay Indge, attended Apr 2026: We had such a great time this morning with Rehana learning how to do batik, one of the best workshops we've done...and we do a lot! We're all really chuffed with the decorated piece of material and can't wait to see what it looks like tomorrow when we boil the wax off. Thank you for a great morning!
  • 5/5 from Sandra McNamara, attended Feb 2026: So glad we participated in this course, the Teacher was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable about the history of Batik and shared the different styles available today. There were many laughs and lots of smiles from the group, I would recommend this course to anyone wanting a fun, relaxed experience. I will be booking in to one of her other courses for sure.
  • 5/5 from Carole Khaw, attended Feb 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Our teacher was very knowledgeable and helpful. It is so good to learn a new skill. I was very pleased with what I produced and I certainly hope to do more classes in the future. Thank you for a lovely morning.
  • 5/5 from Helen Wills, attended Jan 2026: it was a very relaxing informative class really enjoyed it loved the outcome
  • 5/5 from Amanda Wood, attended Jan 2026: I attended the Indonesian Batik workshop in Jan 2026. Rehana, the instructor has outstanding skills and knowledge (and is highly educated in textile art). She guided our group of beginners through the Batik process patiently and gave very clear instruction/guidance. I enjoyed the process of experimenting with Batik and would recommend Rehana's workshop to anyone wishing to learn and make something using the process.
  • 5/5 from Julie-Anne Jacobs, attended Jan 2026: Part of Kester’s 2026 modified SACE includes Creative Arts. To compliment this, we are finding classes of handicrafts from different cultures for Kester to do socially this year. Yesterday, as Kester pursues SA Country Shows again this year he did an Indonesian Batik class in Adelaide to learn a new skill, with Poppy as his support (Poppy learnt this handicraft in school…a few years ago. Was still a little bit of a refresher for him- although he said once the class started, it surprises you what memories come back!) Taught by Rehana Usman, a Pakistani Textile Design Artist, the class was stepped out well for Kester to follow- although the wax process in his design did see interest waiver in the middle there somewhere! For people attending with varied needs such as physical and intellectual disabilities- I recommend a support worker to assist. Although the class is 2 1/2 hours there is a lot to achieve and assistance to keep things moving is a must or the project won’t be ready in the timeframe provided to take home. Depending on varied abilities, arrangements for a support worker 24 hours after the class to complete the process may be required at home (washing dye, ironing) and even prompting to turn over that 24 hours (alarms on phone might work for some).
  • 5/5 from Amanda Hazel, attended Jan 2026: Amazing experience! I really enjoyed learning the techniques and look forward to returning to learn more.

  • 5/5 from Rachel Schutt, attended Sep 2025: Rehana ran an intimate workshop for myself and my Mum. We felt very supported in our work, through the structure of the workshop and Rehana’s hands on support. It was a very relaxing, mindful process. We appreciated being able to create something that we can use (Mum made a table runner and I made a piece that I plan to use in my kindy teaching). The time flew by!
  • 5/5 from Pam McEvoy, attended Jul 2025: I have done both the Pakistani Chunri Textile Dyeing and the Indonesian Batik workshops with Rehana. I have thoroughly enjoyed both. They are fun, relaxing and very well organised. Rehana is very knowledgeable and is able to share this knowledge in a clear and concise manner while offering hands on support if needed. Highly recommended.

  • 4/5 from Rebeka Ryding, attended Feb 2023: It was good, I enjoyed learning the process and using the hot wax to make our designs, cool new skill to learn! I love the way the finished fabric looks, everyone's turned out amazing, and the teacher was very competent and able to teach well. I think the class was a bit overcrowded, not enough work stations/ supplies meant standing around waiting for our turn to use the dye, the flowers design etc but it didn't really matter, just would've appreciated a more relaxing experience!
