Landscape Painting Workshop: Forest Bathing

Discover mindfulness by forest bathing and painting a figurative landscape

5 hours Class size 1 to 5 guests

  $175 (Afterpay available)

Come up to the Dandenongs to immerse yourself in the rainforest and then paint your own experience in this Forest Bathing painting session.
Guided by local fauvist artist Jacqui Christians you will create works influenced by her recent exhibition, 'Forest Bathing', and you will journey into her approach to freeing you up your approach to painting.
You will begin with an artist intro, a preview of her body of work, an outline of the day and time schedule for each process and then start the session with a ten-minute walk into the local ferny forest. Finding a place in nature to inform your work is a great mindfulness step to begin your day.
There will be lots of time to experiment and explore new techniques as demonstrated.
We work primarily with Acrylic paint on canvas, and some posca pens and pencil.
The days flows firstly with demonstrations of process to make wet on wet backgrounds on your canvas, finding and feeling your own harmonious colour palette. Then we practicing making marks in unique ways to represent foliage and trees. A final quick compositions drawing exercise for contouring a figure in a posture for placing into your landscape.
Over the last 2-3 hours you will combine all these approaches into your own personal painting.
All work and instructions created in this class are for students personal use only and should neither be reproduced or used for commercial purpose as they are based on Jacquis personal creative artwork style and her intellectual property.©2023
A smaller group allows us to connect with our practice and meet others. You will have lots of time to focus on your work and finalise your piece in 5 hours. This informal approach guides you to find your own style and confidence in painting with less head and more feeling in your work.
There is no formal lunch break, so bring your own food to graze as we work. Amenities are here including kettle and microwave and good coffee shops in the village, just steps away if you need to get lunch.
Bring layered clothing suited to cooler or hot weather, as the workshop space is on our light-filled enclosed verandah. You can breathe fresh air, hear local birdlife, and enjoy daylight to work in. It is heated and sheltered but we do close space for June and July in the frostier months. Wear good enclosed footwear for our little forest walk.

  • 5/5 from Lisette Weiler, attended Nov 2024: What a pleasant way to spend a wet Sunday. The forest bathing workshop provided a wonderful exploration of the use of colour and its application on canvas to provide a background for our interpretation of a forest scene. Step by step Jacqui took us through many techniques. She was supportive and allowed our individual creativity to come forward. Highly recommended Many thanks. A wonderful gallery
  • 5/5 from Joanne Blannin, attended Aug 2024: A wonderful class in a beautiful welcoming space. Jackie is a patient and kind teacher who knows how to help everyone just as you need it. The day was well paced with time to explore ideas and try new skills. All tools were provided & nothing was too much trouble. I’m thrilled with my painting and can’t wait to have a go at home. I’m planning on another trip to the gallery for another workshop soon. I highly recommend these workshops!
  • 5/5 from Jackie Downton, attended May 2024: Teacher Jacqui was very friendly and shared her knowledge of painting readily. Her instructions were clear and she helped where required, yet still leaving it to us to achieve the end result. Location was great, even with the uninvited tourists!!!!. Not did I only get to paint and bring it home, but the knowledge I picked up from Jacqui was invaluable learning techniques about paints and painting, use of materials and tricks of the trade. I thought with materials provided and Jacqui readily sharing her skills and knowledge it was good value. I also liked the small group. Would highly recommend as the knowledge I walked away with is invaluable to my interest in painting and to try other techniques. Jacqui also spoke of other classes of interest, so she wasn't there to just promote herself. Also parking availability EXCELLENT.
  • 5/5 from Katie Gomes, attended May 2024: What an absolutely wonderful workshop. Jacqui showed some wonderful techniques that I’m looking forward to start exploring in the near future. Thoroughly enjoyed every moment, Jacqui encouraging and allowing us to explore our connections within the environment of the forest and surroundings. Even though the Gallery was busy with people coming and going I was great full Jacqui kept our area separate as wanting to keep in the zone not being to distracted. I feel this work shop was really good value, I was lucky enough to be given a voucher for Mother’s Day. Jacqui continually checking in on us to make sure we were comfortable. I look forward to my next session.
  • 5/5 from Samantha, attended Jan 2024: Jacqui was patient and helpful. She has a great energy and I felt comfortable to ask questions. I can be quite rigid when it comes to undertaking any task but the class was a great way to unwind and to try not to overthink (even if I did over think some aspects of the creative process, but Jacqui helped unblock me haha). I case I had a lovely day. The class is held outdoors so if you’re going on a hot day pack some sunscreen (the panting area is undercover but you may still get a little sun). I learned some new techniques and will definitely have a go at doing them myself from home.
  • 5/5 from Sarah Lim, attended Jan 2024: We really enjoyed this experience. Located in the stunning Sassafras we started the day with a light icebreaker to meet one another and then head off on a little (easy) walk into the forest to bathe in our surroundings to prepare for our painting experience. Teacher was lighthearted and there to help along the way guiding us well through each step. All materials needed provided aside from having to bring your apron which was no worries at all. It was a lovely experience and a great way to reignite a passion for painting or to dip your toes in and learn some new skills to paint something expressive even if you are a complete beginner.
  • 5/5 from Jamie Randall, attended Dec 2023: Fantastic workshop. I learnt so much. Beautiful spot and it was great to walk and be inspired by the forest and natural surroundings. Jacqui is a very talented artist and teacher. I will be back for another workshop!
  • 5/5 from Mani Kingar, attended Nov 2023: Had a great day in the workshop with Jacqui. It was so useful and learned heaps of tips. The day flowed so well and was perfectly spaced. I feel super confident in practicing at home now and will definitely be doing my own forest bathing inspired work on my own
