Learn Wheel Throwing at Kingston Clay Studio
Kingston Clay Studio was founded by Will McCanless, a second-generation potter carrying on the Seagrove, North Carolina pottery tradition, with over 40 years behind the wheel. Will’s work has been recognised with the title of North Carolina’s Pottery Laureate and featured in a PBS documentary, but what matters most day to day is this: every instructor at Kingston Clay Studio is personally trained by Will, so whether you’re learning directly from him or from one of our instructors, you’re learning the same techniques, standards, and approach built over four decades of hands-on craft.
That’s the difference at Kingston Clay Studio. This isn’t a workshop assembled from a script. It’s a genuine pottery education, passed down and taught with care by people who know the craft inside and out with decades of professional ceramic experience.
In our small-group wheel throwing workshop, you’ll get hands-on, personalised guidance as you learn to centre clay, master essential throwing techniques, shape a functional vessel, and refine your piece to a professional finish. Whether you’ve never touched clay or you’re looking to build real skill, you’ll be learning an approach shaped by decades of genuine expertise.
Perfect for date nights, birthdays, team building, a solo creative reset, or an outing with friends and family. Kingston Clay Studio is proudly NDIS friendly, so everyone is welcome to join in.
Your finished piece will be fired and glazed and ready approximately four to eight weeks after your workshop. Want to make more than one? Additional pieces can be fired for just ten dollars each.

Kingston Clay Studio offers a full path to grow your skills beyond a single workshop, including 4 and 8 week term classes in both wheel throwing and hand building, private lessons for one-on-one instruction, and studio access programs for those who want to come in and create on their own. What you'll get

  • Make as many pieces as you like in this session, with one of your creations signed and kiln-fired to completion. One piece is included in the class.

What to bring
  • We provide aprons, but we suggest you also bring:
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you prefer, you can bring an old towel.
  • Long hair tied back.
  • Trimmed nails are ideal, but we can assist if you have long nails.
  • Please make sure you remove watches, bracelets, and rings before class.

Studio owner and second-generation potter Peder Wilhem McCanless, trained in the Seagrove, North Carolina tradition, has spent over 40 years as a working potter, production studio owner, gallery owner, and nonprofit pottery organization leader across the US and Australia. That background sets the standard for everything taught here. Our instructors teach proven production techniques, the same methods used by potters working in the industry, not just classroom exercises. The equipment throughout the studio, including our wheels, kilns, mixers, and pugmills, is professional-grade gear we also sell directly to the public as an authorized dealer for Nidec-Shimpo and Venco. Our facility is fully heated and cooled, well lit, and spacious enough to host team building events for up to 50 participants.
