Urban Watercolour Painting Class for Beginners

Class size 1 to 20 (public classes), 12 to 40

Explore the city through watercolour.

Join us for a relaxed, hands-on watercolour workshop inspired by the urban landscape. We’ll look at the shapes, textures, light, and atmosphere that make our streets and buildings so interesting to paint.

You’ll learn how to turn everyday urban scenes into expressive watercolour paintings, whether you’re drawn to grand architecture, quiet laneways, cosy shopfronts, old buildings, or the organised chaos of the city.

We’ll explore techniques including:

  • Creating simple architectural forms and perspective without getting bogged down in technical drawing
  • Using washes to suggest skies, walls, streets, and reflections
  • Building texture and detail with confident brushwork
  • Working with light and shadow to give buildings dimension
  • Suggesting windows, doors, signs, and street details with minimal marks
  • Using colour to capture atmosphere rather than simply reproducing what you see
  • Adding people, cars, trees, and other details to bring a scene to life
  • Loosening up your approach and embracing the happy accidents of watercolour

You’ll work from a selection of urban reference images and be encouraged to develop your own interpretation rather than simply copying a photograph.

No previous watercolour experience is required. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to loosen up and develop your existing practice, you’ll leave with new techniques, ideas, and a collection of urban-inspired studies to continue exploring.

Come paint the places we pass every day and discover how much magic there is in an ordinary street.

Please note: This class requires at least 5 students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class, fully refund you, and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class.

Liana Kappelle

Liana Kappelle

Liana Kappelle is a multidisciplinary artist, maker and workshop facilitator whose practice is driven by curiosity, storytelling and a healthy dose of the weird and wonderful. Working across painting, illustration, textiles, sculpture, paper arts and mixed media, Liana loves exploring the space between art, craft and ritual.

A lifelong lover of folklore, esoteric traditions and tarot, Liana often brings these threads into her creative practice, exploring tarot as both a tool for storytelling and a rich visual language of archetypes, symbols and human experience.

As a facilitator, Liana is passionate about making creativity feel accessible, playful and genuinely enjoyable. Her workshops are less about getting things “right” and more about experimenting, getting your hands dirty and discovering what happens when you give yourself permission to make something imperfect.

With a background in psychology and classical studies alongside years of teaching and facilitating creative workshops, Liana brings a thoughtful, encouraging approach to the studio. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a lifelong maker, she believes everyone has a creative practice waiting to be poked, prodded and let loose.
