Graphite Drawing

We kick things off with warm introductions — a chance to meet your fellow creatives and settle in!

We'll talk through your materials, explore the world of still life, and by the end you'll be drawing your very first subject in graphite.

Charcoal drawing

Charcoal Drawing

After a well-earned morning tea break, we pick up our willow charcoal and get stuck in!

This time, your drawings will be bold and expressive — rich, dark tones with beautiful textured backgrounds.

Soft pastel on colourfix paper

Soft Pastel on Colourfix Paper

After lunch, we bring in the colour!

Using soft pastels on textured paper, you'll create vibrant, expressive drawings that really come to life.

Acrylic on canvas board

Acrylic on Canvas Board

We finish with paint on canvas board — bold, colourful and satisfying. A gorgeous way to round out your beginner's art taster day!

This beginner's art taster day is the perfect introduction for adults who have always wanted to explore drawing and painting but aren't sure where to start! Led by Tracey, who brings many years of experience teaching art to adults, you'll feel supported and encouraged every step of the way.
Over 6 hours, you'll work through four different mediums — three dry and one wet — beginning with graphite and willow charcoal, moving into soft pastels, and finishing with acrylic paint on canvas board. Throughout the day, we focus on still life, and you'll be amazed at how much your work improves from your very first drawing to your last. It's called a taster because it's designed to spark your creativity and give you a feel for what you love — and who knows where that might lead!

I’m a trained art teacher with many years of classroom experience, and for the past 11 years I’ve been teaching from the Bowral Art Gallery Studios (BDAS). While I’ve taught all ages — from preschool through to HSC students — my passion later in life has been working with adults in the community, including complete beginners and those returning to art after retirement.
My own art practice is varied and experimental. I work with acrylic paint on canvas, ink on yupo, lino-cut printmaking, and sketching, and I have a particular love for the tactility and expressive possibilities of charcoal. That hands-on understanding of materials flows directly into my teaching.
I run weekly art classes that usually span 8–10 weeks each term, as well as weekend workshops throughout the year. My classes are supportive, practical, and skill-building, with a strong focus on helping students understand materials and techniques in a clear, achievable way.
Nothing gives me more joy than hearing someone arrive saying, “I can’t even draw a stick figure, ” and then, just a few weeks later, seeing their confidence grow as they realise what they’re capable of creating. Helping people achieve their artistic ambitions — often far beyond what they thought possible — is the most rewarding part of my work.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll find my classes encouraging, friendly, and focused on real progress.
