A hands-on and fun workshop on how to forge your own unique fire poker from mild steel in our well kitted out studio. We are located in the heart of Melbourne... and... we are all about forging hot steel!
Don't worry if you've never tried blacksmithing before, our experienced teacher will guide you every step of the way and you'll be safely instructed on creating something truly unique which will be yours to keep.
You will learn how to use a coke-fired forge, anvil, hammer & tongs and... best of all... you get to wear one of our funky leather aprons!
Bring a curious mind and a willingness to learn and we will take care of the rest.
If after your session, you find yourself wanting to extend your skills, you may want to explore our
other workshops we have on offer. We offer classes in steel sculpture and jewellery, enamelling, knifemaking and for those wanting to get a more in depth understanding of the art of blacksmithing, we also offer multi-day courses.

  • 5/5 from Andy Howcroft, attended Mar 2026: My teenage boys and I did the class (making a fire poker) and thought it was fantastic! Hugo and Alex were great at explaining everything and helping us get through the trickier parts. The workshop is well organised and has plenty of room; there were a few of us on the day and we all had heaps of room to work. Would definitely advise anyone to get involved for something different to try - and you get a fire poker to go home with (or three in our case!) - 10/10!!

  • 5/5 from Krish Gupta, attended Aug 2024: Steve was an amazing teacher. I am definitely not a natural at blacksmithing but with his guidance and encouragement even after breaking my first one half way through I was able to go home with my very own fire poker. Hope to take more of his courses soon!!

Steve offers a rare mix of passion, effervescent energy and a love of people, resulting in memorably experiences where everyone feels welcome...
And then... there is Harry, the resident forge hound with an equally sunny disposition who will greet you at the door with a big smile and wet nose!
Steve discovered the colourful world of blacksmithing in Belgium, during a midlife sabbatical. Upon return, with two big anvils and a legvice under his belt, he set up a forge in Footscray's picturesque Water's Edge Arts Precinct.
In 2013, he initiated Australia's first Blacksmiths Festival, now being held biannually on the banks of the Maribyrnong River and run by a team of volunteers.
Steve has a degree in Earth Sciences, studied blacksmithing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, obtained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is currently completing a Certificate in Industrial Blacksmithing at TAFENSW.
Apart from teaching, he also offers a well equipped space for members to come together and forge.
