Behind the counter of every Latin panadería sits a tray of something golden, flaky or sticky that someone's abuela swears by.
In this class you'll bake four of them and every one comes home with you.
I'm Jen. I learnt to bake in my grandmother Margot's kitchen in Caracas and trained in French pastry here in Melbourne. I'll share the little things that make these pastries work, the ones a recipe card never tells you.
"The perfect way to spend an afternoon. Brought this for my mums birthday, the teacher was very informative and the food we made was delicious. Bonus it was receipies we could make at home without to much fuss." - Sherelle Aldridge
What you'll make
  • Pastelitos (Cuba): Shatteringly flaky pastry wrapped around sweet guava and soft cream cheese. Cuba's favourite partner for a cafecito.
  • Golfeados (Venezuela). Soft spiral rolls with panela, anise and salty white cheese, glazed in sticky papelón syrup. A Caracas bakery favourite, and mine.
  • Suspiro limeño (Peru). Silky caramel cream under a cloud of port meringue. Its name means "a Lima woman's sigh" and after one spoonful you'll understand why.
  • Palmeritas (Latin America-wide). Crisp, caramelised pastry hearts. A panadería staple you'll want to make every weekend.

  • 5/5 from Mary Sparano, attended Sep 2025: Such a great class. Lots of fun and delicious goodies to learn to make. Jan was an excellent teacher - explained and demonstrated everything very clearly. She was obviously very passionate about the food she was teaching us to prepare and sharing that knowledge with participants.
  • 5/5 from Sherelle Aldridge, attended Mar 2025: The perfect way to spend an afternoon. Brought this for my mums birthday, the teacher was very informative and the food we made was delicious. Bonus it was receipies we could make at home without to much fuss.
  • 5/5 from Valda Comber, attended Sep 2024: We loved Jennifer's approach, using her grandmother's recipes. New taste sensations and so many items to prepare and enjoy.
  • 5/5 from Fiona Lee, attended May 2024: My Mum and I absolutely loved our class with Jen and Marcella - we were greeted with such a warm Latin welcome (and agua fresca!) and proceeded to learn how to make not 1 but 5 different South America sweet treats over the next 3 hours. We also learnt about the origins of some of the desserts, had plenty of sweets to take home to share with extended family afterwards, and were sent the recipes to try at home. I stumbled upon this class when looking for an experience gift back for my Mum's birthday back in March, and it was a bonus that I could book the class in as a chance to spend Mother's Day together! I would highly recommend this class as a special Mother's day experience. Thanks you both for a special afternoon!
  • 5/5 from Carol Blandthorn, attended Apr 2024: The teacher was amazing. Ingredients were all ready measured and she took the time to discuss what link it had to the country it was from and where we could find ingredients

REAL FLAVOURS, REAL STORIES
A Journey from Caracas to your table
Hi, I’m Jen, the heart behind Margot & Montañez. My story starts in a little kitchen in Caracas, Venezuela, where my grandmother, Margot, first taught me that food is more than just sustenance... it’s happiness you can give.
She wasn’t just an amazing cook; she was a culinary rebel who believed the best recipes are those made with love and shared generously.
Growing up, I spent countless afternoons in her kitchen, mesmerized by her hands turning simple ingredients into magic. By the time I was twelve, I was baking alongside her, soaking in her stories and techniques. When Margot passed away at seventy-three, she left me not only her recipes but also her legacy - a deep love for creating food that brings people together.
That legacy became my compass as I traveled the world. From Venezuela to the US, Denmark, the UK, and now Australia, I carried Margot’s spirit with me, along with a suitcase packed with recipes and memories.
I started with humble alfajores, but over the years, I’ve refined my craft as a qualified pastry chef, blending traditional South American flavours with the global influences I picked up along the way.
WHAT I BRING TO THE CLASS?
As a pastry chef, I pair the techniques with the Latin desserts I grew up on. So you learn the why behind each step, not just the recipe.
Teaching and sharing desserts is also my way of keeping Margot’s spirit alive. There’s something magical about seeing someone’s face light up when they take their first bite of something they’ve made or when they nail a baking technique they thought was impossible.
Through Margot & Montañez, I’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of passionate foodies, hosting team-building events for small and major companies and even introducing Latin flavours to people who’ve never experienced them before.
Every recipe I teach has a story; some of them may start with Margot. Classes are small and you bake in pairs, so you’ll get real help, plenty of tasting and at least a box of something delicious to take home.
Let’s make something together that’s worth sharing.
Te espero en la cocina!
