Introduction to Food Forests
A two-day hands-on workshop for home gardeners.
Creating a resilient, productive food forest in your backyard is one of the most rewarding ways to grow food. By mimicking the structure of a natural forest, you can create a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides abundant harvests, improves soil health, and supports local biodiversity—all while reducing maintenance over time.
In this workshop, we’ll explore how to design and install a backyard food forest that meets your household needs. You’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to create a layered, perennial system that provides food, habitat, and beauty year-round.
Over two days, we’ll cover:
  • Understanding forest ecology and natural succession
  • Planning and design for small-scale food forests
  • Selecting productive and resilient plant species
  • The role of support plants and soil builders
  • Practical installation and planting techniques
  • Long-term care, pruning, and “chop and drop” maintenance
  • How to create a thriving ecosystem that adapts to a changing climate
This workshop will take place at the Hazelbrook plot, where participants will take part in the installation of a new food forest. Ongoing workshops will continue as the system evolves, offering opportunities to deepen your learning through each stage of growth.
Day one focuses on building a strong foundation of knowledge. Through engaging discussions and real-world examples, you’ll learn the key principles that make food forests work—from understanding ecological relationships to designing for your specific space and needs. On day two, we’ll put that theory into practice with a hands-on installation session, where you’ll help create a functioning food forest from the ground up. You’ll leave with practical experience, a clearer understanding of how to apply these concepts at home, and a bundle of resources to guide you as you design and establish your own thriving backyard ecosystem.
