label $130 (or 4 payments of $32.50 Afterpay)

Looking for unique things to do in Adelaide? Discover the fascinating process of ebru (marbling) at this interactive workshop with Eda Tevrizci!

This workshop will commence with a brief history of ebru and an introduction to traditional materials. You will gain a general understanding of how this art form was used in earlier times and how it's being used in today's world.

You will then continue with the techniques and application process of traditional ebru patterns/designs and transferring them on paper. You will also learn the nature of the materials, how the solution and paints are prepared and how they are applied to create patterns.

During the session you will learn to create at least five different ebru patterns and their variations:

  • Battal Ebru / Stone or Rock Pattern
  • Gel-Git Ebru / Tidal Pattern
  • Taraklı Ebru / Combed Pattern
  • Åžal Ebru / Shawl Pattern
  • Bülbül Yuvası Ebru / Snail Pattern

Everyone will have their own tray set-up and it will be a hands-on experience where participants will get a chance to produce a series of unique ebru artworks, that will reflect their inner vision and creativity.

In the final part of the class, your teacher will hand over an object (bamboo fans, coasters, greeting cards etc.) to transfer your ebru pattern on!

Observe the brightness of colours on the still water surface and enjoy the meditative process of the creative transformation of colours and patterns! The therapeutic nature of the practice helps with relaxing the mind.

You can frame your finished artworks, make bookmarks or use them in your papercraft projects.

I loved doing this workshop. Eda is a lovely teacher who simplified everything for us and also gave us the history of ‘Marbling’ or ‘Ebru’. It’s is lots of fun and you don’t need to be artistic to get great results with this medium.

The turkish Erbu class was well organised, Eda explained the Erbu history, how each components/colours etc., are made and took time to practically show each pattern the class was so much fun, 2 hours went quickly I'm going to frame my work for sure. Eda Tevrizci is a professional Ebru artist living in Australia since 2016. She started to work on traditional Ebru art early in 2015 which stole her heart immediately and has been practising it since then.

This art form has been added to UNESCO's world cultural heritage list in 2014; she uses water surface as a canvas and then transfers the created patterns onto paper, fabric or other materials.

Using natural pigments, traditional materials and water surface as a canvas, she tries to find a balance and connection between the traditional and modern designs through her works but she is more after in creating contemporary, abstract forms rooted in the traditional art form.

After living and running workshops in Melbourne for five years, she now conducts ebru workshops and short-term courses in Adelaide for art lovers who are open to a unique experience — paint on water surface.

Apart from workshops, she also creates tangible ebru designed jewellery and fashion accessories, stationery and home decoration products all of which reflect her vision of life.

For Eda, Ebru is a lifelong learning journey and she is keen to share her expertise with people while trying to achieve more each and every day. She loves the freedom and endless possibilities that Ebru offers and always looks for new and creative ways to adapt it to the new forms of today’s world.
