At this hands on cooking class you will learn how to cook flavoursome Indian dishes!

While Indian cuisine varies region to region, it's always underpinned by delicious spices and rich flavours. Led by an expert Indian cooking instructor from Otao Kitchen, you will spend a social cooking class learning how to identify and cook with these spices, as well as where to buy them and how to store them.

You'll also gain knowledge on the key ingredient in Indian cooking, ghee, the clarified butter that goes into all masala spice blends. The class will be a fun mix of demonstrations and hands on making time chopping, preparing and cooking your dishes.

At the end of the class everyone will sit down and enjoy the Indian food you have made along with a glass of wine or beer.

Indian Cooking Class I (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov)

- Butter Chicken: a rich and creamy dish from northern India with succulent morsels of boneless chicken cooked in a smooth, velvety yogurt sauce with cream and aromatic spices.
- Rogan Josh: a classic curry dish
- Aloo Samosa
- Chapati

Indian Cooking Class II (Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec)

Explore food of North India and food of South India in this cooking class. You will see climate, culture and food changes from each of these regions of India. You also learn these differences in cooking styles, techniques and flavour profile, this delicious cultural journey is for you right here.

- Cashew vegetable curry: a north Indian layered rice dish of marinated vegetables in aromatic spices. Famous - Vindaloo: morsels of chicken simmered in a sweet, sour and hot sauce, tempered with curry leaves
- Chicken Biryani
- Handmade Naan 
- Mint raita 
- Red lentil dal


On the day:
Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start time of the class. We cannot accommodate or refund for those who arrival after the scheduled start time, even if you call ahead. The instructor will be expected to start on time and will not be able to repeat the health and safety and/or demonstrations at the beginning of the class.

Important info:
We can cater to different dietary requirements. If you need to cancel or reschedule a booking you must do this at least seven days before your class to cancel or reschedule. We are sorry that we cannot refund or rebook any cancellations made online or in person after this time. In the event that you are unwell we ask that you send someone in your place. The participants who are not unwell will still be expected to attend. Alternatively, if you provide notice prior to the class, you are welcome to collect the ingredients and online recipe to take home with you after the class. Please note that this may not be possible as fresh meats and seafoods in all cases.

Chef Hà Nguyen began his career in Hanoi local restaurants and the Hilton Opera Hotel before travel, study and work in Wellington, New Zealand –New Zealand Diploma in Cookery and Bachelor in Hospitality Management at Wellington Institute of Technology. Chef Hà has started with Intercontinental Hotel Wellington, working with Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk developing menu for Alkina Lodge along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, delivering nourishing and fresh menus to clients.

He believes that cooking, eating and sharing should be an experience, not just a meal. He created OTAO Kitchen as an extension of his passion for food and to share this passion with others. Food plays an important role in his Vietnamese culture heritage and is central to his family life. Sharing a meal with family and loved ones is a traditional and happy experience. He wishes to extend this experience to you and welcome you to OTAO Kitchen.
