Looking for relaxing things to do in Melbourne? Experience mindfulness on the pottery wheel at Heer Pottery in Box Hill South.
This is a hands-on experience, but it's mostly self-guided. You'll have free time to get familiar with the wheel and experiment with different techniques, working at your own pace.
How the two hours run
  • First 30 minutes: your teacher introduces you to the wheel, sets you up and gives you tutorial cards to guide you.
  • Next hour: self-guided clay time. Let your creativity flow and shape your pieces. Your teacher stays nearby to keep things supportive and unobtrusive, so ask away if a question comes up.
  • Last 20 minutes: your teacher helps you take your pieces off the wheel, and we tidy the workspace together.
You'll take every piece home the same day.
Please note: this class does not include glazing or firing. Your creations will air-dry beautifully and make lovely decorative dishes for watches, keys or jewellery. If you'd like your work fired, we run a wheel throwing workshop with kiln firing and a workshop with glazing and firing.
Sessions are cosy and fill up fast, with a maximum of 12 guests and 2 instructors.
What you'll get
  • Every piece you make, to take home the same day (air-dried, not glazed or fired)
  • 30 minutes of teacher-led introduction, then self-guided time on the wheel without teacher assistance
  • 500g of clay
  • Tutorial cards to guide you through the techniques
  • All essential materials — just bring your enthusiasm
