Q: Wondering whether we learn how to use the traditional indigo dyes?
The class uses natural indigo dye but in a powder form. I prepare the vat prior to the class so there is ample time to prepare fabrics and dye due to the class only running for 3hrs. Preparing indigo vats from leaves takes days and I have only ever used the powder forms. The class is focused on the resist dyeing techniques (folding, binding, clamping fabrics) used in shibori dyeing.

A: Adults & 10+ years. An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

What you'll do
Learn the ancient Japanese art of Shibori dyeing in this fun and relaxing Sydney workshop!In this beginner-friendly class, you will have the chance to manipulate fabrics with tiles, clamps and an array of folding, stitching and tying techniques to achieve unique aesthetics. Be amazed as indigo vat-dyed pieces oxidise before your eyes and turn from green to blue, as we apply a natural indigo dye.All fabrics are provided but you're welcome to bring your own too. If you wish to bring your own fabrics, these can be cotton, linen, hemp, Tencel, bamboo and silk (anything made of natural materials works, just no synthetics or synthetic blends).All students will take away with them a range of dyed samples, as well as a tote bag and tea towel - something to treasure for years to come!This class is run in a fun and relaxed environment and is a great gift idea for creative folks.Please note this class needs 5 students to go ahead. The class will be rescheduled to a later date if there are not enough students.

I’ve been facilitating open to the public DIY screen-printing studios in Sydney for the past 13 years across a few independent creative spaces such as Anyplace studios in Rozelle, Blackwire records in Annandale and currently run The Printroom out of Monster Mouse Studios in the industrial landscape of Marrickville.I studied textile design at the Eastern Sydney Institute of Technology and instead of being disheartened by the move of hand printing to digital forms and sitting behind a computer all day, I decided to start my own studio. This could not have been achieved without the support and head start afforded to me by Anyplace projects - a group of folks who reclaimed unused buildings and transformed them into creative community driven spaces.I spend most of my time teaching people how to screen print, Shibori dye fabrics and other surface design techniques. I print a lot of band merch for friends and friends I haven’t met, and help run Monster Mouse Studios as well as work on my own artistic practice.
