Originally from Germany, Monika baked sourdough bread with her Mum since she was four years old.
In this baking class, Monika will share her knowledge and will introduce you to the foundational principles and hands-on practices of sourdough bread making. Each of the steps in the process will be demonstrated and explained in detail. You will learn how to create your own sourdough starter from scratch and how to feed it, different techniques how to improve dough structure after mixing and how ingredients and temperature will influence the process. Under guidance, you will create your own sourdough bread and put your new skills into practice with plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way.
Above all, this class will make you feel comfortable and supported, so you can confidently create your own beautiful loaves at home.

  • 5/5 from Em Dean, attended Sep 2026: Monika is an absolutely fantastic teacher. With her backing molecular biology she really understands dough and breaks it down in the easiest way to understand. She is passionate, generous and knowledgeable. The class size is kept small so everybody was personally attended to (which had not happened in prior sourdough workshops I have attended!). Can't recommend enough!
  • 5/5 from Verity Mansfield, attended Aug 2026: Monika was so welcoming, informative and engaging. She made it so easy to learn, and our sourdough turned out amazing! Have aleays struggled to get it right in the past, but learnt so much from Monika. Will definitely be back for her next class. Cant rate her highly enough!
  • 5/5 from Fran Grundy, attended Aug 2026: This was a lovely class. We were welcomed to Monika's home for a really informative class which built on the basic knowledge of sourdough we had. I particularly liked that Monika is a science minded person and approaches learning about making sourdough in the same way, discussing all the different variables and how they affect the experiment! It is of course, mixed with a love for bread and the process, which made for a really great session.
  • 5/5 from George Woodburn, attended Aug 2026: Excellent lesson! Very knowledgeable teacher who supplied everything together with a comprehensive set of notes! I will never look at the humble loaf of bread in the same way again! ….. it really is a science!
  • 5/5 from Alessandra Alfano, attended Aug 2026: I really enjoyed today's sourdough baking class with Monika. She is really knowledgeable and I appreciated a lot her scientific approach to the matter, including explanation of what happens in each stage and why. The bring-home booklet we were provided with is really handy to be able to replicate the results at home.
  • 5/5 from Anna Birgitte Eyres, attended Jun 2026: Loved the class. Very competent teacher, and super organised. And we got to eat bread at the end of class…..
  • 5/5 from Kristin Ham, attended Jun 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make sourdough with Monika Makes! I was impressed to discover that I was one of her first students, because the class was so well-structured and thoughtfully organised, without ever feeling overly regimented. Monika has a real gift for teaching, breaking down each step clearly while leaving room for questions and experimentation. By the end, I felt genuinely confident about baking sourdough on my own. Highly recommended for anyone curious about getting started!
  • 5/5 from Cinzia Loddo, attended Jun 2026: Loved Monika’s bread baking class! As a complete beginner, I really appreciated how we spent the session learning practical techniques for making bread, from mixing and kneading to shaping and baking. Monika was warm, patient, and clearly passionate, and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I especially loved gaining confidence with the dough rather than just following a recipe. Such a fun and worthwhile experience!
  • 5/5 from Ethan Chen, attended Jun 2026: Extremely fun and informative
  • 5/5 from Ceridwen Clocherty, attended Jun 2026: What a lovely class. It was highly informative so I learnt a lot, but also very hands on so we did a lot. Monika explained everything very clearly and was delighted to answer any questions. She was warm and welcoming and it was like we were baking with a friend. We got to take home our starter, our dough, and some bread she cooked in class. I’m really looking forward to baking my loaf tomorrow!
  • 5/5 from Thea Linke, attended Jun 2026: I did the sourdough foundations and practice course with Monika and it was fantastic! I was raised on bread (being german) and it is one of my favourite foods, so learning how to bake myself was very cool. The course was very hands on with lots of explanations on what is happening at every step of the fermentation process - and we even got to sample a hot bread fresh out of the oven - so delicious. Monika is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable in all things dough - I'll definitely be back for more baking.
