Looking for a one-of-a-kind, hands-on experience in Canberra? Whether you're planning a cosy date night, organising a special event, catching up with friends, or simply feeding your creative soul, The Slow Burn Studio by Calm by B offers a fun, relaxed, and eco-conscious candle-making class that hits all the right notes.
Hosted in the tranquil surrounds of Weston, at the Deep Blue Ceramics Studio, this three-hour session is your chance to slow down, get creative, and craft something beautiful with your own two hands. You’ll learn the basics of soy wax candle making, explore scent blending, and bust a few common candle myths along the way. No stress, no fuss—just good vibes and great fragrances.
At Calm by B, we believe the name says it all—creating candles should be calming, fun, and true to your personal style (and scent preferences). This isn't about perfection—it's about the joy of making, the beauty of scent, and the pleasure of taking home something handmade and heartfelt.
What you’ll learn:
  • The different types of wax and why soy wax is our go-to
  • Candle science including the perfect heat temperatures for melting and pouring
  • Essential oils vs. fragrance oils – what’s the fuss about?
  • An intro into fragrance creation, blend beautiful fragrance oils to craft your own signature scent
  • How to calculate wax-to-fragrance ratios like a pro
  • Understand why the right wick matters and how it impacts your candle’s performance
  • The tools of the trade (and how to use them safely and confidently)
  • Follow along using our custom Calm by B worksheet to capture your learnings
  • Candle dos, don'ts, and myth-busting tips to level up your candle knowledge
  • Finish your candle with a label that suits your style, from minimalist designs to statement options
You’ll pour your own custom-scented soy wax creations into beautifully curated vessels. You’ll make one large candle and two smaller candles, designed with intention and blended with your favourite fragrances. Your candles will be luxe, gift-worthy and absolutely burn-worthy.
Note: This class is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

What to bring
Nothing but yourself. We’ll provide everything—including aprons to keep your outfit clean. Just wear comfy clothes and closed-toe shoes—no need to dress to impress (unless you really want to).

Hi, I'm Belle — the maker and founder behind Calm by B.
My journey into candle making began as a personal escape — a way to slow down and reconnect with calm amidst the chaos of everyday life. I’ve always loved beautiful scents and simple elegant design, and after experimenting in my friend's kitchen with soy wax and natural essential oils, I was completely hooked. There was a real moment of magic the first time I lit a candle I’d poured myself — it sparked something that’s since grown into a thriving business and creative outlet.
What I love most about teaching candle making is how accessible and therapeutic it is. I’ve seen people walk into a workshop stressed or unsure and leave completely at ease, proud of what they’ve created. Sharing this craft is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about learning to make candles — it’s about creating space for mindfulness, joy, and connection (and of course, taking home something beautiful too!).
Something unique about Calm by B is our commitment to natural, sustainable materials and elegant simplicity. All our candles are made with 100% plant-based wax, free from nasties, and blended with carefully curated scents designed to calm the senses. I also love to create something different, including sculptural candles like femme and masc torsos and botanical shapes — and yes, I’ll teach you how to make those too!
I bring not just hands-on experience, but a genuine love of what I do. During our workshops, you’ll learn the basics of candle making, explore scent blending, and one of my favourite parts; bust a few common candle myths along the way.
