What you'll do

Do you have a ceramic project in mind and require technical and artistic mentoring to help bring it to life?

Book a one-on-one session with one of our experienced teachers to discuss your questions.

We can help you with project details such as:

Where to start.
Which materials to use (clay, glaze).
Which clay building techniques are most suitable to make your project a success.
How to create a realistic timeline that takes into account the specific ceramic processes required for your project.

Some examples of what this could look like:

Example 1-

J wants to make 3 nesting decorative bowls but needs advice on construction, clay selection, surface decoration and achieving even shrinkage. Her deadline is 4 weeks away. We'll help work out a time frame around her availability and advise her on clay options, building techniques and decorative finishes.

Example 2-

M has been experimenting with delicate clay sculptures during Open Studio and wants to create a larger version of one of his experiments. He needs advice on the best process to create it. Before embarking on the project, he needs to order the correct clay and plan a building method to ensure it is strong enough for the drying and kiln firing phase. He would like to meet on a monthly basis to discuss the development of his idea as it progresses.

Example 3 -

H is doing Visual Arts for HSC and has decided to use clay as a medium. She has made a few maquettes using air dry clay by following a video on YouTube and would like technical advice on how to incorporate fabric scraps and newspaper clippings as surface decoration. We will advise her on how clay surfaces react to different materials e.g. glue on glazed vs unglazed or textured clay, as well as any aspect of the project that she needs guidance on.

Example 4 -

T has been attending ongoing group classes at our studio. Her pieces are developing and she'd like to enter a group exhibition. She would like to meet fortnightly for guidance through her application process including feedback on her text (artist statement and bio) and photography of her pieces.

This consultation is booked on an hourly rate and can be used as one hour-long session or spread out over 2 or 3 sessions, for example 2 x 30 minute or 3 x 20 minute sessions.

Located at iconic Bondi Beach, Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio nurtures creativity, wellbeing and community through clay.

The Studio is run by Agatha Pupaher and Leanne Berelowitz in partnership with Waverley Council. Agatha co-founded and currently manages Sydney Clay Studio, a creative space and kiln firing service in St Peters. Agatha is a ceramic artist and educator who is passionate about sharing her love of clay. Leanne has a BFA in ceramics and glass from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and a Master of Cross-disciplinary Art and Design from UNSW Art and Design, Sydney. She has been teaching ceramics for 15 years. Both Leanne and Agatha are practising ceramic artists who exhibit their work in group and collaborative exhibitions. In addition, they have both worked in former careers; Agatha, as a child and family psychologist, and Leanne, as a registered nurse. They value each other’s transferable skills and expertise in working with people of all ages, and draw on them for their art teaching.

Agatha and Leanne value deep learning and making, and aim to help students create space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Hands, head and heart working together to bring ideas to life. They teach the classes along with a small team of passionate tutors and ceramic artists who share a similar slow approach to creating/working with clay. While pottery/ceramics is about making things, their teaching approach is to initially fixate less on the outcome, and focus on building skills and developing techniques through creative exploration.
