Located at iconic Bondi Beach, Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio nurtures creativity, wellbeing and community through clay.

The Studio is run by Agatha Pupaher and Leanne Berelowitz in partnership with Waverley Council. Agatha co-founded and currently manages Sydney Clay Studio, a creative space and kiln firing service in St Peters. Agatha is a ceramic artist and educator who is passionate about sharing her love of clay. Leanne has a BFA in ceramics and glass from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and a Master of Cross-disciplinary Art and Design from UNSW Art and Design, Sydney. She has been teaching ceramics for 15 years. Both Leanne and Agatha are practising ceramic artists who exhibit their work in group and collaborative exhibitions. In addition, they have both worked in former careers; Agatha, as a child and family psychologist, and Leanne, as a registered nurse. They value each other’s transferable skills and expertise in working with people of all ages, and draw on them for their art teaching.

Agatha and Leanne value deep learning and making, and aim to help students create space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Hands, head and heart working together to bring ideas to life. They teach the classes along with a small team of passionate tutors and ceramic artists who share a similar slow approach to creating/working with clay. While pottery/ceramics is about making things, their teaching approach is to initially fixate less on the outcome, and focus on building skills and developing techniques through creative exploration.

Great space, small and cosy. Agatha our teacher was awesome, very clear, able to teach at each of our levels, and fun. The studio had everything you could want for the classes, and more. We learnt foundational wheel throwing techniques and all created pieces we’ll hopefully be able to take home. I’m even signing up for more classes!

I absolutely loved this class - Leanne was so patient and helpful and the venue was in a lovely spot at the Pavilion. I managed to make 2 olive dishes and in my last class created 3 dishes ready to be trimmed when dry which I hope to do soon.

Absolutely awesome! Kids had a blast. Kids got a go at generic pottery (my son made a pinch pot, my other a car) they also had a go at the wheel.

There is a coffee shop 20 metres away that serves beer. I had a couple while keeping an eye on them.

We then went to the beach there after. They offer a number of other services like family training. I want to do that, and then spend the rest of the day at the beach.

I love the handbuilding class.
I am learning a lot about glazing and glazes. Glazing is a difficult process and our teacher Leanne is very good at explaining the correct way to achieve the best results.
This class is teaching me to slow down and to enjoy the process of working with clay.
It is a great way to take a break from our fast paced world and to focus on creating.

I have tried to learn how to 'throw' pots on a number of courses over the years. This is the first time I have succeeded! Leanne is a great teacher. She breaks down the different steps involved with throwing and turning a pot into manageable and easy to understand steps. There are small numbers attending the classes, so she is able to ensure that everyone receives the necessary supervision. I can't wait to return and glaze my creations!

Agatha gave an excellent talk and run through of all the glazes with example works used in all different glazes and combinations - everyone had brought their own works to be glazed
But to get the real benefit
having test tiles in the different clays to try out all different combination of glazes to see the effects - as you now have different clays as well

Hi Alexandra,

Thank you for this feedback. I'm glad we were able to discuss this over the phone and that your child enjoyed the class. As mentioned in our conversation, we don’t fire the pieces in these holiday workshops as they are taster classes for children to try out the pottery wheel and explore clay. We will make this more clear in our class description. As a 1.5 hour one-off session, we find that children are more relaxed to explore and be playful with their creations when there is no pressure of a finished product. They may end the workshop with a piece they love and/or they may have simply enjoyed the sensory experience, being creative and learning some new skills with a wonderfully responsive medium like clay. Pottery pieces require a few sessions to work on throughout the different stages of dryness and we offer term classes for children where they can follow through each week and complete their work to the firing stage. We do hope to see you again in future!

I loved every minute, the 2 hour sessions fly by too quickly. Agatha’s passion and love of clay really comes through in her teaching. The studio is a creative space where no idea is to wild. With Agatha’s guidance I’ve built skills and developed techniques that will enable me to “try my own thing” in open studio.

I really enjoyed getting back into clay! I've now done 2 x 5 week courses, and am looking forward to studio time. Wheel work is challenging to most newbies, but fun. Small class size means enough time to ask questions from your friendly instructor. It's all hands on, and you learn new snippets each week. The 2 hour sessions fly by too quickly though! The studio space is in Bondi Pavillion - easy to get to by bus, and lots of parking if you're doing a night class.

What a great experience, I have learnt more in this five weeks about my hand placement than all my four other short course combined.
I was lucky to have such a great teacher (Leanne Berelowitz) she was so patient and such a calming presence. The new center is lovely and my course had all the tools I needed. Defiantly would recommend Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio for anyone wanting to learn or practice their ceramic skills.
I hope to return when I get a chance.

I took a two day poetry class during the holidays, and i do not regret my decision. The teacher who led the class was extremely helpful and nice. The instructions were clear and helped me a lot when working on the wheal. However it was a bit hard to remember some of the instructions at the start. Despite this, it was a really good experience that made me want to pick up Pottery.

Agatha is a fabulous teacher. She guided us two newbies through the process of glazing pots we had made in her previous class. She helped us with colour selection and application technique. It was very therapeutic way to spend an evening. I really enjoyed the Pottery Wheel Intensive Workshop for Beginners Class. The studio has a really nice breeze with lots of natural light coming in.
