Hand Building Foundations Course: Form and Surface

Learn foundations skills of hand building with clay over five weeks at Bondi Beach!

5 x 2 hours Class size 6 to 8 guests       $380

Experience the joys of making with clay as you learn foundation techniques of hand building in a small group. You will have opportunities to make functional pieces as well as sculptural forms.
Held at Bondi Pavilion, you will explore hand-forming techniques of pinching, coiling and slab building, as well as gain an understanding of the properties, stages and types of clay. You will be guided to consider form, function and design in your making.
During the five sessions, you will try different styles and methods of working with clay and make a variety of small objects. Some will be experimental for learning purposes. At the end of the course, you will have an option of recycling some works and firing others.
The aim is to give you the skills and confidence to work independently on projects of your choice once you have completed the course. Some students choose to repeat the course multiple times as a way of further expanding their skills. Others choose to work independently without tuition in our Open Studio sessions.
Please note:
This class does not involve learning how to make on the potter’s wheel.

Located at iconic Bondi Beach, Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio nurtures creativity, wellbeing and community through clay.
The Studio is run by Agatha Pupaher and Leanne Berelowitz in partnership with Waverley Council. Agatha co-founded and managed Sydney Clay Studio, a creative space and kiln firing service in St Peters from 2017-2024. Agatha is a ceramic artist and educator who is passionate about sharing her love of clay. Leanne has a BFA in ceramics and glass from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and a Master of Cross-disciplinary Art and Design from UNSW Art and Design, Sydney. She has been teaching ceramics for 15 years. Both Leanne and Agatha are practising ceramic artists who exhibit their work in group and collaborative exhibitions. In addition, they have both worked in former careers; Agatha, as a child and family psychologist, and Leanne, as a registered nurse. They value each other’s transferable skills and expertise in working with people of all ages, and draw on them for their art teaching.
Agatha and Leanne value deep learning and making, and aim to help students create space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Hands, head and heart working together to bring ideas to life. They teach the classes along with a small team of passionate tutors and ceramic artists who share a similar slow approach to creating/working with clay. While pottery/ceramics is about making things, their teaching approach is to initially fixate less on the outcome, and focus on building skills and developing techniques through creative exploration.
