Kiln-Form Glass Art: Block Fusing Workshop

Build new skills in contemporary kiln-formed glass in this dynamic two-day workshop!



15 hours total (over 2 dates) Class size 6 to 8 guests       $595

This exciting beginner-intermediate-level course will equip students with new and more complex kiln-forming skills, whilst fostering each individual’s artistic direction in glass.
Students will be encouraged to draw on their own creative ideas, interests, to undertake a layered block fusing project. The 2-day course will require students to consider colour, pattern, form, and composition as they create designs on Bullseye sheet glass, which will be fused in a stack to form an artwork featuring layers and depth.
Following block fusing, students will be introduced to cold-working glass techniques to grind, polish, linish, and engrave their finished block. These cold-working techniques and processes will be taught and executed on day two of the course.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this two-day workshop, each student will have the skills to:
  • Create a layered block of glass (up to 10 sheets thick)
  • Linish, engrave, hand-lap, and polish their glasswork and operate a range of glass coldworking machinery
  • Integrate high-fire enamels
  • Operate a kiln and program firing schedules
  • Implement appropriate health and safety procedures
Knowledge required
Basic knowledge and experience of glass cutting and fused glass processes preferred.
We will provide:
  • All tools (glass cutters, pliers, rulers, etc)
  • All safety equipment (safety glasses, masks, gloves, etc)
  • All artistic materials including art glass(a select range of glass frit and powders, sheet glass, enamels, glass glue, drawing materials for planning, etc)
What to bring
  • An apron or clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty
  • Closed shoes
  • Some creative ideas and inspiration
  • A packed lunch (morning tea nibbles and hot beverages provided)
  • A water bottle

Our studio is only a short walk from Sydenham Train/Metro Station. There is some street parking available in the surrounding area.

Our Studio Glass Workshop program in Sydney, Australia, runs throughout the year from our purpose-built glass studio at Studio4 in Sydenham. Our glass studio is fully equipped with state-of-the-art glass kilns, cutting, grinding, and polishing equipment, as well as darkroom and screen printing facilities.
The studio glass workshop program was founded in 2014 by Australian contemporary artist Kate Baker. Each year the program expands to accommodate the growing needs of continuing students and now incorporates a series of masterclasses with local and visiting artists, sharing their unique technical skills and knowledge in glass.
All our studio glass workshops are conducted by professional artists with university degree level expertise or greater, specialising in Studio Glass. The program is growing to include visiting professional artists both nationally and internationally.
