Learn how to make your own unique mug in this live online class! You will discover so many possibilities for building that perfect mug without using a pottery wheel.
This is a so-called slab building technique and we are going to create a marble-patterned slab first, then build a mug out of it. The emphasis of this class is on learning how to create unique patterning fresh clay, playing with colours in clay creation without (or prior to) glazing and hand building a basic shaped mug.
Within 80 minutes, you will have the pleasure to learn this technique, and you may want to keep perfecting your new skill, hence you will have enough material supplied for two mugs and enough tips and instructions to continue developing your art.
If you wish, you can choose to add a handle or a “thumb holder” to it additionally. You will be supplied with sufficient materials to build your mug and to develop a multicoloured pattern that is embedded in a mug.
Your teacher Irina will demonstrate making a unique texture pattern or marble effect as shown in the photos - the options are numerous.
Your teacher will also instruct you on how and where to fire your piece and all the rest you need to do to complete your perfectly functional mug and be able to drink your morning tea or coffee from your art piece. It does feel great drinking from something hand-built!
Express shipping is included in the price.
Please note:
Everything made of ceramic must be fired in ceramic kilns. The colour that you see inside of the mug is a glaze. Glazing comes after the first firing and must be fired again. Firing is cheap and you will get the information on where to do it during the class.
Please keep in mind that all pottery changes colours and appearance upon firing. The contrast and brightness of colours are significantly increased by kiln firing (compare photographs from workshops versus finished mugs).
At the checkout, you can choose the option to order the tumbler from us (cylinder cup).
Tumbler’s purpose is to help us build the mug, if you are confident to do it without it, you are more than welcome to.
If you are using one from your home- make sure that is either cylindrical shape or wider towards the top so that you can take it out.
It can’t have a handle nor a relief.

  • 5/5 from Hugo, attended Jun 2023: The materials were spot on and instructions were clear and easy to follow. Each one of us got a mug done within the time and they all looked really nice! Our host Irina even took some extra time to show us how to make handles later on.

  • 5/5 from Emma Little, attended Dec 2022: Great class for beginner pottery enthusiasts. Irina was friendly and professional. She gave very clear and easy to follow instructions and I was able to work at my own pace. I was always terrible at working with clay in high school, but because of Irinas guidance, I’ve made a mug that I will actually feel proud to show people! Can’t wait for my Kintsugi class next week! I will be booking more classes for sure Thank you Irina and ClassBento team!

  • 4/5 from Sarah Redmond, attended Sep 2021: It was a really interesting class and quite messy, but we got right int here and made a mug, which I must say I'm very proud of!
  • 4/5 from Vittorio Lim, attended Sep 2021: I enjoyed this activity. I feel that a short explanation of how it would all come together before starting would help people follow along. All in all, it was a constructive and fun break from lockdown boredom. Thank you.
  • 3/5 from Nicole Papworth, attended Sep 2021: The class was more a narrated sculptor making a mug rather than a clear class. I'd suggest starting with explaining the steps and having some examples to show before we launch into doing. In our teams conversation after the teacher left we all mentioned we were lost at many points and would have appreciated knowing what was coming next so we could have planned better. I don't think anyone in our class actually ended up with a successful mug and many of us had done pottery classes before.
  • 5/5 from James Dalton, attended Aug 2021: We had so much fun doing this class. It was so lovely getting our hands dirty and learning about sculpting mugs
  • 4/5 from Brook Hendricks, attended Aug 2021: Great class! Loved trying something new and it was awesome to have received everything ahead of time in the mailed kit. I could have used double the amount of the plastic covering to avoid the huge mess on my countertop as I would have wrapped my table in baking paper beforehand if I knew how messy I would get! That said, I would have benefitted from a few more instructions beforehand, including recommended mug types to have prepared for the session. We also went over the allocated time by a fair bit - we had a chatty group which likely contributed to it but we did start making our mug right away and I still felt like I had to rush to catchup to the instructor being such a newbie to pottery. Overall I loved this class and will recommend to my friends and colleagues. THANK YOU!
  • 4/5 from Carrie Inne, attended Aug 2021: I know it can be hard to set up at home but I sometimes found it hard to see what was happening through the laptop camera and was behind for most of the time. Otherwise it was a new experience and would do it again! Thanks so much!
  • 4/5 from Charlotte Chaplin, attended Aug 2021: The team had a great time and were able to join in via video call. There was a lot of laughter and fun had by all.
  • 5/5 from Rez Cabala, attended Jul 2021: This was such a good class! Irina is such a lovely teacher and paces the class very well. You get heaps of opportunity to ask questions and chat to the teacher. Exactly what I needed during lockdown! Thank you so much!
  • 4/5 from Chantelle Dabrowski, attended Jul 2021: This class was good but felt like a bit more instructions would be useful and would have been handy to know the kiln requirements beforehand and glaze to be used
  • 4/5 from Jo Dunster, attended Jul 2021: My teacher was nice and got straight into the class. There was a lot to cover and I should have taken her advice and gotten one of the tumblers as I got a bit muddled trying to use my own container for creating my form. It was a fun way to do something with my partner and makes me want to try other zoom classes.
  • 4/5 from Norma Shalley, attended Jul 2021: An enjoyable evening. Friendly instructor and even as complete beginners we are very satisfied with our end product (clay mug).
  • 4/5 from Taylor Kanty, attended Jul 2021: Had a really good time taking this class, and was a great lockdown activity. There could have been more instruction however, from Irina. A few things that would have helped: 1. Giving us a warning as to how much clay to use at the beginning, if we want a handle, noting that we need clay for the bottom of the mug, for the 'glue paste', etc. 2. Noting how to use the colours, and that instead of mushing them into the clay, it should be more 'painted' on the outside to help the colour appear. 3. Setting up-front what we should be using the colours for. I ended up using all of my colours to mix into the clay, and wasn't made aware that we still needed the colour to paint the mug after. 4. Giving more guidance on the size of the mugs. I did my class with 3 other people, and I can guarantee that none of our mugs will look anything like the examples in the pictures. I would recommended this class to others as all supplies were accounted for and it was fun, however I think it just needs some further instruction.
  • 5/5 from Jessica Douglass, attended Jun 2021: Great class. Everything you needed was included in the box and the teacher was very knowledgeable
  • 5/5 from Kim Cardwell, attended Jun 2021: I received all the required materials and had heaps of fun learning how to go through the steps to make my mug. I felt well taken care of with her eyes over my work every step of the way providing feedback for necessary adjustments. I can't wait to fire my mug and start using it, I'm so happy with the end result! Thank you so much
  • 5/5 from Leah Cuthbert, attended Apr 2021: Great fun! And very practical, easy to follow and adaptable - I could make a GIANT mug for my GIANT cups of tea Thoroughly enjoyed my Sunday morning class Thanks Irina

Her instructions were easy to follow and everyone’s mugs turned out looking really good! Looking forward to firing the mugs later to see the finished product. It was a really good introduction to mug making for first-timers. Thanks Irina for leading the class and answering all our questions.
  • 5/5 from Claire Cooke, attended Nov 2020: I had never tried something like this before. The class was a gentle introduction and I learnt some cool things. Very glad I got the mold - that made life much easier.
  • 5/5 from Megan Andriessen, attended Nov 2020: A relaxed way to spend an hour on a Sunday. A very patient teacher who was also generous with her knowledge and really keen to help at every step of the process. I’m hoping I’ll get the opportunity to do another class very soon.
  • 5/5 from Sandy Hedger, attended Oct 2020: We had so much fun and Irina was so patient with our inexperienced giggling group. Highly recommend!
  • 3/5 from Monika Patsali, attended Oct 2020: I didn't receive the cup mould. Class seems a bit pricey for whats involved. Also wasn't aware there was extra work and more costs involved to complete product post the tutorial. More time is required for the class in order to allow more questions. Great teacher very informative and easy to follow. I will recommend for other people.

Hi, I'm Irina.
I like to introduce myself as a sculptor, although I'm engaged in different art disciplines too. I have never had another profession, nor have I wanted one. I fell in love with three-dimensional art at a very early age which came to me naturally, as I was born in a family of artists. It was the world I've grown up in, a measure of value around me.
I have graduated from Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture, and with a bit of luck, I had a chance to work internationally and gain great experience in different industries and media. Cooperating with professionals from other creative fields has perfectioned my skills and broadened the views of my artistic expression.
I have tried to gather all the projects I am engaged in on this website, showcase it, sell and teach my art. Always open for the new projects with fellow creatives, just get in touch.
