What you'll do

This open studio time is available to people who have completed at least 1 foundation hand building course with us. Many students choose to increase their skill development by continuing hand building foundation classes and adding open studio making time.

During your sessions, you will have access to a hand building table and equipment at times that suit you. Initial class times will be run concurrently with teacher-led wheel throwing class.

Before attending your first session, please book into a free 30-minute Induction to Open Studio. You can do this on our website in the Open Studio page in our classes tab.

Knowledge required

This class is for people who have completed at least one of our 5-week foundation hand building courses and feel they are ready to create/practise, manage their prep, work-in-progress, recycling and cleanup without tuition

What you'll get

purchase 3kg bag of stoneware clay($13)
Time in the studio to work independently on self-directed projects/artworks.
A discounted firing rate of $15/kg for both bisque and glaze firing of stoneware clay (external firings are $20 per kg).

What to bring

Clean apron.
Closed shoes (essential).
Clean hand towel and a bag to take it home in to wash.
Your own set of tools.

Located at iconic Bondi Beach, Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio nurtures creativity, wellbeing and community through clay.

The Studio is run by Agatha Pupaher and Leanne Berelowitz in partnership with Waverley Council. Agatha co-founded and currently manages Sydney Clay Studio, a creative space and kiln firing service in St Peters. Agatha is a ceramic artist and educator who is passionate about sharing her love of clay. Leanne has a BFA in ceramics and glass from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and a Master of Cross-disciplinary Art and Design from UNSW Art and Design, Sydney. She has been teaching ceramics for 15 years. Both Leanne and Agatha are practising ceramic artists who exhibit their work in group and collaborative exhibitions. In addition, they have both worked in former careers; Agatha, as a child and family psychologist, and Leanne, as a registered nurse. They value each other’s transferable skills and expertise in working with people of all ages, and draw on them for their art teaching.

Agatha and Leanne value deep learning and making, and aim to help students create space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Hands, head and heart working together to bring ideas to life. They teach the classes along with a small team of passionate tutors and ceramic artists who share a similar slow approach to creating/working with clay. While pottery/ceramics is about making things, their teaching approach is to initially fixate less on the outcome, and focus on building skills and developing techniques through creative exploration.
