Sashiko Workshop with Yoshi: Mindful Sewing and Repair

Learn Japanese repair and sewing techniques with local artist Yoshi Ito.

3 hours Class size 1 to 15 guests       $85

Join Yoshi Ito for a hands-on sashiko workshop that goes beyond craft to explore the Japanese philosophy of Mottainai - a mindful approach to waste that blends gratitude, humility and creativity. Rooted in the idea of respecting resources, this workshop will introduce you to traditional Japanese textile repair and reuse techniques such as sashiko.
  • You’ll learn practical Sashiko sewing and repair skills while reflecting on how small, thoughtful actions like fixing rather than discarding can have a big impact.
  • Yoshi will share not only techniques but also stories and cultural insights into how these practices connect to the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and a deeper respect for materials, time and effort.
This is not just a craft workshop, it’s an invitation to slow down, connect with your belongings and honour the value in what we already have.
What you'll get
New sewing skills and Japanese History lesson.

  • 5/5 from Susan Roberts, attended Jun 2026: Yoshi was knowledgeable, keen to share her knowledge, & there was sufficient time to try-out the techniques she had demonstrated. The 'there-are-no-real-rules' philosophy, apart from the basic design of stitches to create patterns, meant creativity could flow. Each participant seemed keen to experiment & create! I have come away inspired to get on with some long-neglected mending projects.

Yoshi was a teacher with a great sense of humour, the other participants were lovely and, at the end of the day, we all went away having produced a thimble appropriate for sashiko and with the early skills of sashiko practised.
  • 5/5 from Vianney Hill, attended Jul 2025: Sashiko workshop with Yoshi - I learned a lot about culture of Japan's philosophy and history of reusing items/materials after natural disasters (that was lovely) and it was good to learn of the social group in Sydney as well! The teacher was beautiful and it was fun to learn the technique I can implement in my practice.
  • 5/5 from Helena Buljan, attended Jul 2025: Yoshi is a fun and engaging teacher for this class. She taught us to make a small thimble with rescued materials before we started practicing our stitching, holding our needle in the sashiko way (between thumb and middle finger). I’m hoping that my stitching becomes smaller and neater with more practice! Thanks Yoshi and Reverse Garbage.
  • 5/5 from Amanda James, attended Jul 2025: Yoshi was the most fun teacher and such an interesting class. I think a really telling sign of everyone enjoying it so much is none of us wanted to leave and definitely stayed over time. Great experience and would love to do more sashiko classes.
  • 5/5 from Angela Meaney, attended Jul 2025: Yoshi was great. I found it easier when Yoshi came around to us and showed us close up on the sewing required as I have little sewing experience. She was more than happy to give some individual attention too which was terrific. I would look forward to attending another of Yoshi’s courses in the future.

Thoroughly enjoyed the class - learning to make a simple but effective thimble as well as how to start and finish a stitching row and well on the way to creating a unique dishcloth. Yoshi was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher. The venue was fine, all materials were supplied.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Lee, attended Jun 2025: What a great introduction to Shashiko! Yoshi gave great background to the technique and how it originated as well as useful information about materials used. 3 hours flew by and we managed to create our own shashiko ‘thimble’ and create a sampler of stitches. A lot of fun spent learning a very useful new skill!
