Skateboarding has a relatively young history, beginning in California in the 1940s. Invented by surfers as an alternative to surfing when the waves were flat, it’s popularity grew exponentially until it became a $10 million industry by the 60s. Showing no signs of slowing down, skateboarding has grown into its own subculture, and will even debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the first time.
With our skateboarding classes in Melbourne, you’ll be reminded why it’s such a popular sport. Our classes will show you the essentials on how to skateboard safely so you can relax and enjoy it. Although we can’t promise to turn you into the next Tony Hawk, our classes will teach you the nuts and bolts of one of the most exciting things to do in Melbourne.
Skateboarding classes in Melbourne are a great way for both adults and children to work up a sweat, learn a new skill, and get reacquainted with your inner child. Many people learn to skate as a child and then slowly lose the skill as life gets in the way. Our skateboarding classes are perfect for rediscovering your love for it, or taking a risk and trying something new and exciting!
Our instructors in Melbourne not only want to ensure you have a great time getting acquainted with the board but also do it in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Safety is the first priority, and all our class instructors are properly trained in skateboard safety and first aid, so you can practice knowing that if you do take a tumble, you’re in good hands. Learning to skate is also one of the best kids activities Melbourne has to offer, and teaching your child how to skateboard is a wonderful way to get them socialising and active, as well as learning a new sport.
Like with many of our workshops, skateboarding classes in Melbourne are kid-friendly, but also good for group bookings, couples, and individuals. However, getting a group of mates together to learn or relearn an old pastime is a great idea for birthday parties and bucks weekends! Many of our instructors also offer tailored packages to suit the needs of your groups, so always enquire if you have any special requests. Some skateboard classes run adults and children’s sessions separately, so always double-check to make sure you’re booking the class that’s right for you.
Health benefits of Skateboarding
Although skateboarding comes with risks, its physical benefits greatly outweigh them. As with any good cardiovascular workout, skateboarding elevates your heart rate and burns (on average) 340 calories per hour. Correct skateboarding technique does wonders for building muscle; particularly your lower legs and your core. Skateboarding aids in learning instinctual injury prevention. With the likelihood of falling off a skateboard relatively high (particularly in the beginning), you learn how to fall properly so as to minimise personal injury. This skill carries over into every facet of life, and with improved balance and knowledge of how to land, you reduce the risks of freak accidents occurring from everyday slips and trips.
Skateboarding is also an extreme form of “mindful movement meditation”. It takes a high level of focus to skateboard well, and the mental clarity that accompanies that has been linked to decreased levels of anxiety in frequent skateboarders, as well as aiding in depression. The skills that accompany skateboarding also build confidence, which in turn lowers resting stress levels.
Looking to kickflip your way to a workshop with an emphasis on getting active? Our skateboarding lessons in Melbourne are perfect for not only learning how to skate but to also get out in the fresh air and back in touch with your inner child!
