Scribbly Gum Embroidery Workshop

Learn layered embroidery techniques with artist Amy Jones at Made By Me Workshop in St. Peters.

6 hours Class size 10 to 15 guests       $165

Join renowned textile artist Amy Jones of Amy’s Grandpa Cat for a full-day embroidery workshop inspired by the natural patterns of the Australian bush. Drawing from the distinctive textures of scribbly gum trees, you’ll explore layered stitch techniques to create a beautifully textured landscape in thread.
This workshop is perfect for thread lovers—whether you’re new to embroidery or already stitching with confidence. Guided by Amy, you’ll work with a wide variety of fibres, including hand-dyed wool, over-dyed cotton, silk, and metallic threads, to craft your own richly detailed piece. Using stitches such as long and short stitch, seed stitch, French knots, and beading, you’ll learn how to create depth, movement, and interest in your embroidery.
By the end of the day, you’ll take home your own bush-inspired artwork—textural, layered, and uniquely yours.
You will learn how to:
  • How to layer threads to achieve depth and movement in embroidery
  • Long and short stitch, seed stitch, French knots, and beading
  • Tips for working with unusual fibres like hand-dyed wool, silk, and metallic threads
  • Techniques to customize a provided pattern and develop your colour palette
You’ll also have the opportunity to view original textile art pieces for inspiration and gain insight into the design process when planning your piece.
Why You’ll Love It:
This workshop is a soothing, creative way to explore the beauty of native Australian flora through embroidery. With Amy’s gentle and insightful teaching, you’ll enjoy a slow and mindful day immersed in thread, texture, and nature-inspired design. Whether you come solo or with a friend, you’ll leave with new skills, a completed piece, and a renewed creative spark.

Made by Me Workshop is about helping people to connect with their "inner creative" and have some fun while making beautiful things from quality materials in our friendly & vibrant studio space in the heart of the inner west!
Established in 2017 after Rebecca Doyle decided to take a career break and chose to revisit her childhood love for arts & crafts. Rebecca grew up in a large family where money was tight, after school activities where mostly homegrown and usually involved a sheet of cardboard, a glue stick and some glitter! It is probably no surprise to learn that Rebecca followed a creative path to study Fashion & Textile Design at University!
After a few more decades (than Rebecca will publicly admit to) and a long and varied career in the fashion industry, Rebecca wanted to get back to creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind objects - Made By Me Workshop is the result of where this path led.
Rebecca loves that moment of pride that comes over each participant's face when they look at what they have created and say to themselves "Wow - I made this & I love it!"
Made by Me Workshop run a variety of creative workshops, hen’s parties, private parties and corporate events from their warehouse space in St Peters including Resin Art, Resin Jewellery & Mould Making, Soap Making, Terrazzo Homewares, Punch Needle, Macrame and many more.
