Wheel Throwing Foundations Course

Learn how to throw on the pottery wheel in a small class of 6!

5 x 2 hours Location Bondi Beach Class size 1 to 6 guests   $410

Join us in the studio for this relaxed 5-week introduction to the pottery wheel!
You'll be guided every step of the way in a small group of up to 6 students and learn how to throw and trim pots.
Wheel throwing skills improve from session to session and once you have learnt how to make simple forms, you will be able to hone your skills in ‘open studio’ sessions, or continue to learn in our term classes.
There is no emphasis on ‘product’, and this approach allows you to take the time you need to absorb the techniques and understand the principles of wheel throwing in a calm atmosphere conducive to learning. You will make bowls and cylindrical shapes as your skills develop. At the end of the course, you will have an option of recycling some works and firing others.
Come along and discover this amazing art form in our beautiful studio at Bondi Beach!

The structure of the course was excellent - each week built nicely on the previous one, giving everyone enough time to practise the fundamentals while also experimenting and improving. It was a really fun, relaxed environment and a great way to learn something creative. A special shout-out to our teacher, Ariel, who was fantastic throughout the whole course. He explained techniques clearly, was incredibly patient, and had a great ability to step in with helpful tips exactly when you needed them. He created a really supportive atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable giving things a go, even when the clay wasn’t cooperating. By the end of the five weeks we were amazed at what we’d managed to make. Highly recommend the course - and if you get Ariel as your teacher, you’re in very good hands.

  • 5/5 from Deborah Delon, attended Feb 2026: I really enjoyed the 5 weeks wheel throwing. I knew wheel throwing is very difficult and I came with no expectations to produce anything. But Agatha has been a wonderful teacher, as well as a very talented artist. I specially loved the trimming part, it's so satisfying. And I even managed to make some stuff I was really proud of. But more than the result itself, I really enjoyed learning and have a nice relaxing time. The atmosphere of the studio is very nice and welcoming, and it's very inspiring to see other people creations. Thanks Agatha for those 5 weeks, I'll keep coming for sure.

Our teacher Leanne, is patient, pleasant, encouraging, enthusiastic…and so informative and knowledgeable. Her own ceramics are gorgeous. She takes us carefully step-by-step, in all techniques, both throwing on the wheel, and hand building….jugglng all the differing needs of the students. I’ve completed a refresher course, after a 40 year hiatus….I’ll definitely be continuing as I know Leanne will guide me to realize the potential that I didn’t, all those years ago.

Agatha is a fantastic teacher, super skilful and totally letting you learn at your own pace. The venue is light and everything is provided for. The other students were all lovely and happened to be female and around my age which was coincidental but lovely too. Just signed up for another 5 sessions.

Located at iconic Bondi Beach, Bondi Pavilion Clay Studio nurtures creativity, wellbeing and community through clay.
The Studio is run by Agatha Pupaher and Leanne Berelowitz in partnership with Waverley Council. Agatha co-founded and managed Sydney Clay Studio, a creative space and kiln firing service in St Peters from 2017-2024. Agatha is a ceramic artist and educator who is passionate about sharing her love of clay. Leanne has a BFA in ceramics and glass from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and a Master of Cross-disciplinary Art and Design from UNSW Art and Design, Sydney. She has been teaching ceramics for 15 years. Both Leanne and Agatha are practising ceramic artists who exhibit their work in group and collaborative exhibitions. In addition, they have both worked in former careers; Agatha, as a child and family psychologist, and Leanne, as a registered nurse. They value each other’s transferable skills and expertise in working with people of all ages, and draw on them for their art teaching.
Agatha and Leanne value deep learning and making, and aim to help students create space to pause, reflect and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Hands, head and heart working together to bring ideas to life. They teach the classes along with a small team of passionate tutors and ceramic artists who share a similar slow approach to creating/working with clay. While pottery/ceramics is about making things, their teaching approach is to initially fixate less on the outcome, and focus on building skills and developing techniques through creative exploration.
