Held in local pottery studios across the city, paint anything from funky shapes to detailed patterns on bowls, plates, planters or cups—the possibilities are endless! If you're a total beginner, don't stress. There will be a friendly ceramicist to introduce you to the medium and guide you through the pottery painting process. These Sydney workshops are perfect if you're looking for classy hens party ideas, creative team building activities or things to do on a rainy day in Sydney.
Unwind with pottery painting in Sydney near you
Pottery painting has become increasingly popular in 2026 as people look for creative ways to unwind and relax, and it's easy to see why! Not only is pottery painting a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening with friends or family, but it's also a great way to destress after a long day at work. The act of painting requires concentration and focus, which can help clear your mind of any worries or distractions.
Luckily, there are plenty of places in Sydney where you can paint your own pottery or attend ceramic painting classes!
One great option is Silky Shapes in Sydney's Lower North Shore, which offers a wide range of pottery classes and courses. This means you can attend a course and paint your own pottery handmade by you, or attend a one-off ceramic decoration class and pick your pre-made creation. With half the studio dedicated to glazing ceramics, you can bring along some friends or family, settle in with your favourite drink and let your creativity flow.
Another popular spot is Mennt Studio in Marrickville. With a pre-made porcelain cup given to you on the day of the class, there are plenty of funky designs displayed around the studio to draw inspiration from, so you can create something both functional and fun to use!
If you're looking for indoor activities in Sydney that are both fun and therapeutic, consider learning how to paint your own ceramics. With so many options available around the city, there's no excuse not to give it a go!

What to expect at ceramic painting and glazing classes in Sydney
Ceramic painting classes are a great way to explore your artistic side while having fun with friends or family. When you attend a class, you can expect to be greeted by a local maker and teacher who will guide you through the process of creating your masterpiece in the class. They will provide all the materials you need, including brushes and paints, so all you need to bring is your creativity!
During the class, you'll be given a pre-made piece of pottery such as a cup or plate to decorate as you please. You can choose from a wide range of colours and designs to make your creation unique and personal. The instructors will be on hand to offer advice and guidance if needed, but the best part is it's up to you how your artwork turns out, there's no need to follow a set design.
One of the best things about pottery painting classes is that they are suitable for all ages and skill levels. So whether you're an experienced artist looking for a new challenge or a beginner wanting to try something new, there's no better place than Sydney! Many studios offer courses tailored specifically for kids or adults so that everyone can enjoy the experience.
After finishing your masterpiece, it's time for a final glazing! This is where your artwork comes to life as the glaze transforms it into a glossy finish that is both beautiful and functional. Glazing is an essential part of the process that helps protect your artwork from damage while also adding depth and shine.
Your teacher will then fire your unique pieces to ensure they are fully functional and food-safe before you'll then return to pick up your very own DIY ceramics a few weeks later.
