Clay sculpture and hand building for beginners

Clay sculpture and hand building have existed since antiquity, and its popularity has only continued to rise. Although sculpting has a multiplicity of mediums, from stone through to iron and wood, clay sculpting has become the most popular due to its versatility and durability. Being easily malleable and relatively easy to manipulate with your hands, ceramics classes tend to focus on clay sculpture as it’s easily accessible to individuals of all abilities. Clay sculpture workshops and pottery classes are also being praised for their therapeutic benefits, and art therapy has proven to be highly effective amongst individuals suffering from depression and PTSD, as well as degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Many of our pottery classes cater specifically for beginners, so don’t be intimidated if you’ve never done pottery before! These passionate, local potters are as skilled as they are patient, and are happy to help you through the more difficult aspects of clay sculpture so you can get the most out of your time in the class. Whether it’s a ceramics class that shows you how to craft a vase or a pottery class for kids that gets little hands learning, you can be guaranteed that these ceramics classes are a fun and relaxing environment, and make for one of the most enjoyable things to do in Brisbane.

Clay sculpture and hand building is great for your wellbeing

Pottery classes are becoming an integral part of chronic pain management for people suffering from arthritis. As wheel throwing can be too intense for arthritis sufferers, hand building and working with clay has proven to aid in joint strength and pain relief, and is an effective emotional outlet when dealing with chronic pain. Individuals suffering from degenerative brain complications highly benefit also, as those who engage in pottery and clay building have a reduced risk of developing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which leads to dementia. Learning a new skill that engages both your problem-solving abilities and motor function has been shown to increase the white matter in your brain and open up new neural pathways. This wards off brain degenerative diseases before they appear and studies show that people who engage in the arts more frequently have a higher likelihood of living longer.
