Creative Writing Workshop: Design the Opposition

Design a Compelling Antagonist – the Opposition to Your Star.

1.5 hours

Class size 1 to 99 (public dates), 5 to 30
$69 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

For every star, there needs to be a villain… Every main character faces opposition. Every hero/heroine must overcome conflict to reach the last chapter.
Have you got what it takes to create the perfect antagonist for your protagonist?
Because every hero needs someone—or something—standing in their way, I’ll provide writing exercises, insightful prompts to complete, and ideas to explore that will guide you to:
  • Create an antagonist, believable rival, obstacle, or opposing force
  • Understand relationship dynamics and why conflict drives story
  • Build tension between protagonist and opposition to keep your readers hooked till the last page
  • Leave with a stronger story concept
In this workshop, there will be two writing halves of 40 minutes each with a 10-minute half-time break to chat live, top up drinks, and refill snacks.
Tonight is about you, a new writer, in a safe and easy learning environment being guided by a published author and professional writer to challenge your main character with the opposition...
What you’ll get:
  • Guided prompts to create a well-developed antagonist character for your first book
  • Writing frameworks to progress your character’s journey and enhance your story
  • A comprehensive workbook PDF emailed afterwards, which will support your continued writing
NOTE: Public date workshops do not give individual feedback or suggestions on your book or idea. If you’d like longer sessions and question and feedback time, please consider booking a private class.
See you soon!

The State of Writers workshops were created as my partner follows the State of Origin footy matches and I don’t. Apparently, my commentary of the match and players isn’t appreciated, as instead of watching the match with him, he told me to “go write something”… These three writing workshops are the result, and to show sporting spirit, they follow the format of the game.
Each workshop is a stand-alone class, booked separately, and will be offered live once a year via Zoom for 1.5 hours.
Or you can request any of these workshops as a 2-hour private class anytime, which allows questions, feedback, and interaction.
Match 1: Create your Main Character
Your Star Player – This workshop is focused on crafting your book’s main character to be personalised and highly relatable, because strong, unique, yet believable characters are key for your readers.
Match 2: Design the Opposition
The Opposition - Every hero needs someone or something standing in their way… If you attended the first State of Writers match, you have your protagonist. This workshop is focused on creating a compelling antagonist—the opposition to your star. Equally as important as your main character, it’ll be a tough decider who your readers love more!
Match 3: Getting to the Finish Line!
The Grand Final - Learn how to start, continue, and finish writing your book! This workshop is going to be popular! As a published author and experienced writer, I’ll be sharing genuine tips and guidance for not only starting but actually finishing your book! If you can only attend one match to reach your own personal finish line, it needs to be The Grand Final…
WANT MORE? Let’s get you published! Attending any of my workshops will give you early notice for several new writing classes coming soon. All I can share at this stage is, you don’t want to miss them…
Knowledge required
Basic ideas of the book you want to write, and the villain, situation, or issue that challenges your main character.
What to bring
  • Use pen and paper or a laptop to describe and create your character as we go.
  • Have an open mind to learn, experiment, create, and have fun!

female Women-owned

A writer, artist and designer, I spent a lifetime in the corporate and coaching worlds learning about business and people, before finally embracing my creativity full time, publishing my writing and running creative workshops.
I especially love designing unique jewellery, creating self-care items to nurture the soul, building vibrant community, pushing creative boundaries, and of course, writing. If these sound interesting to you also, I look forward to meeting you in one (or several) of my workshops.
Join us in my home studio, online, or pop-up spaces anywhere across the Moreton Bay region, for small, personalised experiences, where you can explore your unique creativity or simply enjoy learning something new!
One last thing… Must Love Dogs… Daxton, our Portuguese Water Dog, is “almost” a therapy dog, who loves food, people and pats, and attending workshops too if it involves the first three! His first art is framed on my wall, and you’ll meet him at our workshops. Daxton is well behaved (well, mostly) and does not shed hair so is practically hypoallergenic. However, if you don’t like dogs, I’m sorry to say but workshops at my home studio aren’t suitable for you as Daxton is always by my side.
Thank you for choosing to share your creative journey with me,
Lisa
p.s. in case you wondered… my first book, Corporate to Creative, published early 2025, is dedicated to supporting creatives to live their creativity in profitable and fulfilling ways. My second book, Gratitude Rising, is about the power of mindset, and is available soon. I also publish an Ink Lily Substack page (@lisapearce11), where I write with attitude, non-subtle motivation, and a dash of optimism when you need it most, for creativity, mindset, careers, and creative businesses.
