In step one we begin our first observational drawing and:

  • discuss the basic geometric forms the object is made from
  • how to simplify different forms and structures
  • measure the object we're drawing so that the proportions are as accurate as possible

2. Complete the Object Framework

2. Complete the Object Framework

In step two you'll

  • use the measurements for your drawing framework
  • we complete the framework and erase any guide marks

3. Study Light and Shading

3. Study Light and Shading

  • we discuss how light and shadow behaves on our object
  • we discuss line and tonal range
  • you'll learn about blocking in tonal areas
  • we explore shading methods such as cross hatching and pencil control
  • we explore how to achieve the illusion of 3 dimensions

4. Complete the Drawing

4. Complete the Drawing

In step four:

  • you'll learn about refining the details in tonal areas
  • we'll discuss how to create a realistic drawing
  • you'll gain experience in observing and learn to notice subtleties of light, shade and surface
  • begin our second observational drawing

All things are made from a few basic geometric forms---sphere, cone, cylinder and cube. Once you can draw those, and with some practice, you can draw anything. In this Sydney drawing class we begin with learning to draw these basic shapes, explore observing light and form and build our practice from there.
Developing drawing skills are foundational to painting, sculpture, illustration and design and a great skill to have to explore your ideas. Join me in this mindful small group workshop.
During this class, we'll complete at least two drawings and cover:
  • materials and types of drawing
  • observing light on objects
  • line and tone
  • how to simplify different forms and structures
  • creating the illusion of space
  • negative space
  • perspective
  • proportion and composition
  • how to draw realistically
