5 Hidden Things to do in Perth for a Perfect Autumn Day

By Jana Lepojevic

With the days getting shorter and the air getting cooler, you may feel like you’re saying goodbye to Perth’s famous beaches but not to worry! There are still plenty of things to do in Perth including some hidden gems you probably didn’t know about. As the seasons change, Autumn becomes the perfect time to slow down and focus on you. It’s a golden moment to get creative and turn your focus to nourishing your brain and your body with some wholesome adventures. So embrace the cool change and explore some of the best activities Perth has to offer this month.

Build fairy houses in Maylands

Hand built fairy house jars

Cottagecore was made for Autumn so get on board this enchanting aesthetic at a fairy house handbuilding workshop by the folks over at The Sunshine Lane. As things get dreary, you need an injection of whimsy! This beginner-friendly morning workshop in Maylands is the perfect way to start your day. Armed with glass jars and polymer clay, you’ll be guided by your teacher to use your imagination and create a magical dream home for our fairy friends. Not only is the end result super cute and Autumnal, but you’ll also get an introduction to working with clay. It’s one of the best hidden gems in Perth.

Make a day of it…

Meander on down to the Swan River after the class for a leisurely stroll along the banks, or enjoy some water sports if you’re feeling adventurous. Once you’ve built up an appetite, get a takeaway coffee and a pastry from Noggo’s then sit along the banks of the river to watch the world go by.

Be amazed by fake cakes in West Perth

Fake cake jewellery boxes

Is it cake? Is it a jewellery box? Is there prosecco? No, yes and yes! This charming fake cakes workshop in West Perth will see you learning real cake piping techniques to make a fake cake jewellery box. Hosted by Colour Co in their super cute white brick studio space, the prosecco will be flowing as you design and create your very own fake cake. Whether you come solo or with your favourite people, this quirky workshop is a fun indoor Perth activity for those who like a little intrigue, or simply those who like the Netflix show.

Make a night of it…

Visit iconic King’s Park and get the heart rate going along one of its many walking trails. If you’re up for a serious challenge, tackle Jacob’s Ladder, a twisting staircase that links King’s Park to the river below over 242 steps. Afterwards, because you just exercised and didn’t get to eat any real cake, visit Fat Boyz Small Bar for some seriously epic burgers and delicious cocktails.

Giant knit a throw in North Perth

There’s no better way to gear up for winter than by knitting your very own throw but we’re not talking about any old regular knitting, we’re talking about giant knitting. What’s that you might be wondering? It’s exactly what you’re thinking. The needles are bigger, the yarn is bigger and the results are bigger. The best part? It’s a little easier to learn than regular knitting because it’s less fiddly due to the larger size of everything! The result? A super cosy throw with an extra chunky look for that premium snugness. Get your giant knit on at this knitting class with It’s Pretty Knotted and pick up a cosy new hobby for 2024. There’s also cake and afternoon tea provided for all the Autumn feels.

Start the day with…

North Perth boasts an excellent cafe culture. There’s even an entire street dedicated to the best eats and brews known as Angove Street Hub. So before your afternoon knitting class, you may want to indulge in some coffee and lunch. Picking any establishment on Angove Street is a pretty good bet but if you like options away from the hub, we recommend Satchmo on Fitzgerald Street. Think Wes Anderson vibes, Jewish flavours and some of the best bagels you’ll ever try.

Embrace sustainability with hand-decorated keep cups

Two resin keep cups

Every day in Perth is a reminder of the beauty of nature, so if you’re looking for sustainable things to do in Perth, try this resin art keep cup workshop in Balcatta. Whether you’re planning to keep it for yourself or give it to a loved one as a beautiful handmade gift, keep cups are a great way to cut down on your plastic use. Plus, you’ll always remember to take it with you because you’ll be super excited to show it off! In this class, you’ll be pouring resin art onto double-walled glass cups to make mesmerising patterns. It’s a calming activity in and of itself and you’ll have a keep cup just in time for all those hot Autumn drinks.

End your evening with…

Balcatta is more known for its commercial industry and suburban living than offering a thriving metropolis. It’s a quiet and safe neighbourhood of families and retirees so unless you’d like to order some takeaway and head on home, we recommend continuing the evening elsewhere. Classes finish at 3.30pm so that gives you enough time to find your next dinner destination. Perth CBD is an easy 20-minute drive from Balcatta. We recommend making your way to a hidden laneway (between Murray and Wellington Streets) in Perth’s CBD and munching on out-of-the-ordinary Japanese dishes at Jigoro.

Discover your creative self with art journaling in Oakford

Beautifully decorated art journal

Our next suggestion isn’t exactly a thing to do in Perth as much as it is a thing to do in outer or regional Perth but it’s such a good hidden gem we had to include it on this list! Tucked away in quiet Oakford, you can slow down and turn inwards at this art journaling workshop. Explore your innermost feelings through mixed media as you focus on the simple joy of creative expression. A mix of scrapbooking, collage and drawing, this class will leave you feeling lighter by the end.

Make a weekend of it…

Make it a day trip and spend the rest of the day exploring Oakford. As a semi-rural suburb, Oakford is super picturesque and relaxing. Plan a farm stay where you can interact with the animals or pick fruit, or you can wander a bit further to the Perth Hills wine region and visit some wineries. Hungry for a bite? Try Naked Apple Cidery to enjoy lunch or dinner in an idyllic setting. There’s even a fireplace and, of course, cider to really get into the Autumn spirit.
