Mid Fire Glazing and Make-Up Class

Finish off your work with a glazing session using mid-fire glazes

Wiping back

Wiping Back

Before glazing your bisque fired ceramics you will need to wipe back any dust with a damp, not wet sponge. Squeeze out all the water in the sponge before doing this, if your ceramics are too wet the glaze won't dry or stick properly, do this to all your ceramics.

Applying wax resist

Applying Wax Resist

You can apply wax resist to your bisque fired ceramics before glazing them as a glazing aid, this simply stops the glaze sticking in areas where we don't want it - for example, the bottom of your work and a 7mm to a 1cm up the edge of the vessel. You can apply this on the pottery wheel with a slow speed or using a banding wheel at the table.

This is NOT required for pieces where you can hold the bottom and dip down into the glaze or if you are brushing on glaze. It's only used if you are submerging the piece in glaze when doing a half/half dip for a plate as an example.

Using Underglaze

Using Underglaze

Under-glaze is different to a dipping or brush on glaze. As it sounds 'under' means that this goes under a glaze and under-glazes don't contain any melting agents so you will see brush marks and layering. You can mix under-glazes like paint to form a new colour. Underglazes are mostly applied on white clay and a maximum of 2 coats, letting each coat dry before applying the next, and then once dried a clear dipping or brush on glaze is applied over the top.

Safety!

Safety

All glazes contain silica, which is dangerous when inhaled. Glaze dries to a powder soft finish, it's important to not blow on this or inhale any glaze dust. Never eat or drink when glazing and wash your hands thoroughly after glazing and in between pieces to avoid any glaze contamination into other coloured glazes.

Stirring dipping glazes

Stirring Dipping Glazes

You will need to stir the dipping glaze before use to mix up all the heavy sediment back into the liquid, this may take 30 seconds to a few minutes. when you look at the brush you want to see that the bristles are free of any glaze clumps, if it's clumpy keep mixing.

Using a dipping glaze

Using a Dipping Glaze

If you haven't waxed the piece (because you can grip it without fully submerging it), fill the inside with glaze using a jug, almost to the top, and pour out after 3 seconds. Hold upside down until dripping stops, then let it dry on the table for a few minutes, wiping off excess drips if needed. For the outside, dip the piece straight down into the same or a different glaze, up to your desired line. Hold for 3 seconds, then pour/lift out and hold upside down until dripping stops.

Half/half application with dipping glaze

Half / Half Application with Dipping Glaze

If you want to achieve a half/half application you will need to apply wax resist to your work. This piece has been dipped in CHUN and EUCALYPTUS and is made from white clay. Our course student Mel dipped on the side by holding the side of the colander and dipping that in, letting it dry and then holding the dry glazed side and dipping the other half in. It's worth overlapping the glazes as the overlap can often be interesting but also allows a full coverage dip.

Clean the bottom

Clean the Bottom

If there is glaze on the bottom of your ceramics, you will need to wipe this off. You can see in the photo that this piece has glaze on the foot and underside, when the glaze is dry you can wipe this off with a clean damp sponge in a rubbing action and make sure all edges of the glaze application are clean, show Klaypots staff before putting your work on the shelf for firing.

Applying brush-on glazes

Applying Brush-on Glazes

Use a hake or soft bristle brush: soak bristles briefly, squeeze out excess water, and shake the jar (lid on) for 10 seconds. Consistency varies between glazes, so don't worry if some feel thinner or thicker. Apply one even coat, let dry, then apply a second (a third if coats are light; skip it if you're heavy-handed).

Instead of wax resist, you can use masking tape and peel it off once dry for a clean edge. For plates, apply glaze to the inside and rim only

Dipping application example

Dipping Application Example

If you want to achieve something like this, you will wax the bottom of your piece. Then pour the glaze you would like to use into the inside of the vessel first with a jug. After removing any excess glaze with a sponge from the outside and when the glaze is dry, you will then dip the bottom of the vessel into the glaze for the bottom section, pull it out and let us dry and wipe off any excess off the wax resist. Then you will dip the top in your. glaze of choice leaving an intentional gap between the two.

Dipping application example

Dipping Application Example

This is an example of using the same glaze inside and out and not using wax. You will pour the glaze on the inside using a jug and then pour out after a few seconds. Let the inside dry and then hold the vessel down into the glaze up to your fingers, pull out of the glaze after a few seconds and then hold upside down until it stops dripping and remove any excess glaze when dry.

Vitrification and unglazed surfaces

Vitrification and Unglazed Surfaces

Any areas on your vessel that are unglazed - in the photo you can see the areas that are blue have glaze and the brown areas are unglazed clay. The unglazed area is still vitrified - so this will not be able to absorb liquids, making it safe for use when washing etc. This can also look really beautiful and can be helpful for gripping on to pieces as the unglazed surfaces is rougher providing more grip.

Final glaze firing

Final Glaze Firing

We will fire your work to cone 6, in Australia we call this mid-fire and the kiln fires to 1220 degrees Celsius over 13 hours. It then takes a couple of days for the kiln to cool and we then unpack it. Please allow 2 weeks between glazing and collecting work. We do not send out reminder emails so it's your responsibility to put a reminder in your calendar for this and you can come it to collect during our opening hours that are shared on Instagram each week. Please make sure to know your group number for pickup.

It's time to glaze your bisque fired ceramics if you have completed a course, please refer to the photo steps above if you have forgotten the steps. You will need to complete your glazing within 4 weeks of receiving the email from us, if it's over 4 weeks you will be required to pay $65.
Members can also use this to book into our main studio to use the mid fire glazes.
Please note: A staff member will be there for supervision purposes but is not there for one on one teaching/mentoring.
