If you have ever wanted to make your own garment or other textile piece but don't know where to start, this sewing course for beginners with Sydney Community College will introduce you to all the essentials!
Over three weeks, you'll learn how to sew in a casual and hands-on environment, practising everything from machine set-up and maintenance to pattern cutting. At the end of the course, you'll make a personalised garment using all the skills you've learnt.
Course outline:
- Week one: Get to know your machine. In this class, you will learn all about different machine parts, how to adjust the thread tension, how to stop and start and more! In this class, you will also gain an understanding of different seams and finishes such as flat seam, French seam and hem finishes and learn when to use them.
- Week two: Learn how to prepare your fabrics and gain an understanding of patterns and cutting. In this class, we'll explore machine techniques like gathering, pleats, pockets and various other applications.
- Week three: Individual project work. For this week, you'll be working on your own project which you will think about and plan out throughout the course.
Throughout this course, you'll discover and practice sewing basics so that by the end you'll be well on the way to altering, repairing and producing beautiful garments.
Please note: You will need to provide many of the materials needed for this course. Please refer to the 'what to bring' section for a full list of what is required for week one. Additional fabric will need to be purchased for the various projects of your choice. Your teacher will advise you of what you will need to buy throughout the course.
Beginner-friendly.

- Please wear closed-in shoes.
- Two metres of calico (120cm width).
- One packet of two clear plastic Singer bobbins.
- Pins and hand sewing needles
- One reel of white and one reel of dark coloured sewing thread
- A pair of fabric cutting scissors
- A pair of small thread cutting scissors or clippers
- Measuring tape
- Notebook, ruler, pen, and pencil to take notes
- You are welcome to bring along your own machine (if portable) if you would prefer to learn on it
Material specifications:
- Machine needles: the machines on campus take standard domestic sewing machine needles. They will have 130/705 H on the packaging somewhere to tell you they are domestic type, which is different from the code for the size of the needle (an 80 or 90 size needle is best for use with sew-all thread).
- Bobbins: must be plastic, not metal. They must be designed for TOP LOADING or "Drop-In" machines. The best bet is to buy a pack that says it's suitable for Singer Drop In machines or Janome Drop In machines (either one will work on both machines). Avoid "universal" bobbins as there is no one-size-fits-all bobbin.
- Thread: a quality thread brand is recommended. Some of the more common household brands are Gutermann, Rasant, Mettler, Aurifil.
This class series runs over 3 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
