Take your sewing abilities to the next level with this intermediate sewing course with Sydney Community College. This three-week course is an extension of our Sewing Course For Beginners and is a great way to continue learning how to sew!
During this comprehensive course, you'll learn a variety of new machine techniques and garment finishes that you can use to create high-quality garments. We'll also explore more advanced applications like zippers, buttonholes, facings, bindings and elastic uses.
Course outline:
- Week one: In this class, we'll look at facings, binding and elastic applications. We'll explore various ways to finish necklines, waistlines and other edges. You'll also learn about fusing and interlining products.
- Week two: Learn how to apply buttonholes and zippers. In this class, we will also work on a cutting out project.
- Week three: Work on an individual project using skills and techniques you have learned throughout the course!
All techniques will be practised at each session on small fabric samples which will enable students to create a sample library that can be used for future reference.
By the end of the course, you'll have a range of new sewing skills and your own completed individual project to take home and use!
Note: Please refer to the 'what to bring' section for a full list of materials needed for week one. Students bringing their own machines will need to ensure that they have zipper foot and buttonhole attachments for their machines. It is also advisable to bring machine manuals for reference.
Intermediate to advanced sewers. We recommended trying out our
Sewing Course For Beginners first!
All your sewing creations and samples!

- Please wear closed-in shoes.
- Four metres of calico or plain cotton fabric of medium weight.
- One metre of white lightweight fusible interfacing.
- Bias binding (12mm wide).
- One and a half metres of white elastic (25mm wide).
- Two regular nylon zippers 16 to 18cm long.
- Threads to match the fabric.
- Scissors, clippers, tape measure and pins.
- Notebook, ruler, pen and pencil to take notes.
Material specifications:
- Machine needles: the machines on campus take standard domestic sewing machine needles. They will have 130/705 H on the packaging somewhere to tell you they are domestic type, which is different from the code for the size of the needle (an 80 or 90 size needle is best for use with sew-all thread).
- Bobbins: must be plastic, not metal. They must be designed for TOP LOADING or "Drop-In" machines. The best bet is to buy a pack that says it's suitable for Singer Drop In machines or Janome Drop In machines (either one will work on both machines). Avoid "universal" bobbins as there is no one-size-fits-all bobbin.
- Thread: a quality thread brand is recommended. Some of the more common household brands are Gutermann, Rasant, Mettler, Aurifil.
This class series runs over 3 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
