Shinhee G. Ma is an Australian, freelance ceramic artist based in Sydney. She is specialised in making contemporary sculptural wares that are playful and functional for everyday use.

Shinhee’s passion for ceramics began when she was enrolled in ceramic course at TAFE. She has completed a B.A (Hons) degree in ceramics at Sydney College of the Arts (University of Sydney) in 1999 and studied Master of Design at College of Fine Arts (UNSW COFA) in 2002. Shinhee has been working as a pewter cutlery/ giftware designer for five years after graduating university and has been teaching art and craft to children for many years.

Shinhee was a very calm instructor who helped us beginners for the first time create something beautiful. We got to practice creating 5 pieces and pick the best one to keep, which included them getting fired and glazed. Great value and attention. I’m booking in for a 3 week course.

The session was informative and gave a lot of freedom in creativity! Help during the session was beneficial but not overwhelming which was great as there was more room for experimenting with the clay. Overall, a very pleasant experience and super excited to see the final result in a few weeks.

This was a birthday gift from my sons. I’ve always loved pottery and wanted to give it a try. It’s heaps of fun and very relaxing. I could have pottered all day. The teacher Shinhee, was quick to contact me soon after booking with all the necessary details and her mobile if needed. The studio is easy to find with available parking. You get to make a mug, jug, bowl and vase and then pick one of them to keep for yourself. Shinhee will glaze and fire your chosen piece and let you know when it’s ready for pickup. She is a wonderful patient teacher and helps you all the way, so you really get a feel for what you’re doing. I’m a bit rough around the edges and so getting my beautiful creations off the wheel was more difficult than I expected. I really enjoyed the class and would love to do it again, but just a tip…I’m a messy gal, so remember the apron and hand towel! Cleanup after class is a breeze and you get to see other potters work as you walk through the studio. An awesome class for anyone who wants to try something creative

My daughter and I did this as a special event together. The teacher was fantastic, so knowledgeable and patient. The resources were great, enabling us to produce works we were proud of with no previous experience. Would highly recommend this workshop for special events or just quality time together, lots of fun and laughs!

Lovely experience! Had a private wheel throwing class with a friend, and the 2 hours flew by. Our instructor Shinhee was a great teacher, the class was informative and relaxed, with just enough guidance so that you can have a go at it independently, but come out of the 2 hours with some decent looking pieces Would def recommend

Such a fun way to spend a morning. All materials were provided and the group was small enough that we got full attention from the teacher through out. Shinhee was lovely. She did a great demo and was super helpful providing individual tips and rescuing our creations from the brink of disaster.

Venue was nice and close parking at the nearby metro. The class was excellent. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed it, and doing it with another couple was quite fun too. The teacher was super friendly and helpful and really guided us through everything. Overall a great experience and I'll definitely be coming again.

Was meet with warm welcome by staff / teacher upon arrival. Was very instructive and friendly. All material provided and also able to keep select pieces of your works once completed. Would highly recommend Clay Cartel to anyone wanting to learn clay wheeling and more.

Shinhee was an excellent teacher and managed our expectations extremely well. The demonstration was helpful and accompanied by clear explanations. Telling us that it took herself 3 months to centre the clay successful each time really helped when it was our turns on the wheel.
The time flew by and with a disaster each, we had made 4 acceptable pots.
Saddest thing to do was discard the failures to end up with only 2 items each to fire and glaze.
I wanted to fire three, as I go the hang of it.

It would be nice to have a follow up classes where you learn to trim the leather clay and the after bisque fire get to glaze. I understand that this is too difficult to manage. Shinhee mentioned her 3 week class which I intend to look up.

Definitely recommend wearing older clothes, as the clay gets everywhere if you are a little energetic.

Had a fabulous time with my mum at this beginner wheel throwing class with Shinhee. Shinhee was super friendly and patient as we got used to using the wheel, opening and shaping our pieces. We made five unique pieces and chose our two favourite ones to be glazed and fired in the kiln. Lovely experience and being just mum and I, Shinhee was very attentive and helpful. Loved it and cannot wait to see our pieces!

Shinhee is an excellent teacher and was incredibly patient with my wife Fiona, who is recovering from a brain injury. The class was perfect for beginners and Shinhee was more than happy to go slower and repeat things again and again for my wife when needed.

So much fun! We had a great time learning pottery as beginners. It was my friend’s birthday and Shinhee was able to accommodate us with a private lesson on a specific date. A great teacher, very patient and encouraging, she made it looked so easy and graceful. Although ours did not turn out to be like hers, we were pretty pleased with our efforts and get to keep 2 pieces each. Thank you Shinhee for a fun and memorable day.

For those outside of this creative field, the beginners wheel throwing class with Shinhee is a unique and priceless experience. Shinhee is a very talented artist and patient teacher, who demonstrates and guides you through the whole process. My partner and I had a wonderful experience to play with the clay and understand how to prepare and shape it into different forms. Definitely a worthwhile and valuable class to take with your friends, family or loved ones.

The experience was fun and interesting. The teacher was attentive and very approachable. Ended up with really nice clay items to take home.
The disapponting part was the fact we had to clean afterwards. I would expect this to be arranged for us and be included in the price. You don't wash in the restaurant after you eat, so why do you have to clean after this experience. I probably would have looked for another provider if I knew this was the case.

I bought this class as a gift for my girlfriend’s birthday and it was a fun and enjoyable experience. We met Shinhee an expert potter with over 20 years experience in St Peters. We started the class rolling clay and then had a quick demo where she demonstrated the wheel throwing techniques such as centering the clay and opening it up into various forms such as bowls, planters and jugs. After the demo we had plenty of time to practice what we learnt with Shinhee close by to give us a hand. I found the class challenging at times but we were given plenty of clay at the start in case we stuffed up our works of art. At the end of the class we got to select two of our favourite works for firing and glazing by Shinhee ready in 4 weeks, and we got to choose from different types of glazing for no additional cost. This was a great class and fun way to spend your Sunday. Would definitely recommend for gifts, birthdays, etc

My friend and I really enjoyed our class with Shinhee. She explained what she was doing thoroughly. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to try wheel throwing. The location was difficult to find as there wasn’t any signage and there was lots of construction in the area.

It is one of the best workshop we've ever taken! We've never done this before but Shinhee is very patient and helpful, she went through the process by creating demos first and gave us some helps while we were creating ours. We came up with few cups, bowls and new skills! Really enjoy this wheel throwing experience, super happy that we can join this workshop on our anniversary. Would do this again!

The 2 hours went by really quickly and we managed to make a few bowls and cups (picking two of the ones we liked the most) which we can't wait to see when they are done. This class was really amazing! The teacher was really good to be teaching us and helping out throughout the class. I gifted this to my husband and he took the class. He enjoyed every bit of clay making, wheel throwing and delicately maneuvering. He would love to come back for more. She also let me stay in throughout 2 hours class and watch a spectator. Overall amazing experience for all those who want to be creative. Also, you get along 2 of your best made pots (glazed and shiny) after a few weeks as a remembrance of your first ever pot you made! ♥♥♥
