Here is an opportunity to learn how I paint my studio paintings using an indirect method of painting. The indirect method of painting is what was used by master artists prior to impressionism.

This event is limited to a small number of attendees in order to ensure that everyone is given the attention needed.

The indirect method of painting is a multi step approach that allows you to develop the painting gradually. It also allows you to correct and modify your work as you progress. Oil paint is a very forgiving medium and learning to use this method gives you a lot of opportunities to create various effects in a painting.

This method of painting allows you to develop detail in a painting and control various light effects.

During these classes, I will show you how I execute my paintings, whether the subject is a landscape, still life or portrait. We will be using the landscape as an example as I teach you the fundamentals of oil painting which will help you to create your own works.

The course will be delivered over 4 sessions of 4 hour each and with enough time in between each session to allow the painting to dry before moving to the next stage. The schedule is as follows:

Throughout the whole course we will be working on a single landscape painting containing different elements that needs to be tackled using various techniques.

Day 1. Sunday 28th May

  • An introduction to the indirect method of painting using a fat-over-lean method. We will then have a look at the various steps of the painting process and the materials we will be using.

  • Drawing and painting composition.
  • Monochromatic imprimatura

Day 2 Sunday 4th June

  • Introduction to scumbling, glazing and impasto techniques, including media.
  • Using a combination of these techniques we will proceed to the second coloured layer where we focus on creating form, light and detail.

Chris is an artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. At the age of six, Chris developed an interest in drawing and at the age of 13, he attended the School of Arts at Palazzo de La Salle in Valletta, Malta.

Vidal's style of work was developed through years of experience in drawing and painting. He considers himself as a contemporary realist with his preferred subject being the landscape. Studying classical arts mainly drawing from life helped him to develop drawing skills and a keen eye for detail. During his studies, he was influenced by the works of the great masters. He is also influenced by the American landscape painters of the Hudson River School and by the Australian impressionists of the Heidelberg movement.

Chris is also a tutor and teaches drawing and painting to adults at various locations around Sydney. He emphasises the importance of drawing as the foundation onto which you can build up a solid skill in painting as you progress.

Having a solid background in science he gives importance to the quality of materials used to create artwork as well as to the importance of understanding why to use a particular technique in the painting process.

Ultimately the aim of the teaching classes is to guide you and help you develop a skill in a way that you will be able to draw and paint without any assistance and to also be your own critique.
