Revive with Indigo Dyeing Workshop

Bring new life to a loved garment with indigo dye.

5 hours Location Marrickville Class size 1 to 10 guests   $120

Join in this fun communal dyeing day with indigo. In this two-part workshop, you will learn some basics of shibori tying techniques and then get to dip your item into the beautiful blue indigo dye bath. It’s magic when you remove your piece from the bath and watch it change from green to blue as the indigo oxidises in the air – the next piece of magic occurs when you undo your shibori to reveal your individual patterning.
What you'll get
You will leave with a newly revived piece of clothing ready to wear!

What to bring
Don’t buy anything new! Bring along a cotton piece of clothing, for example, a t-shirt or shirt (jeans or trousers too big for a communal bath) or cloth (largest 1.5m x 1.5m) you would like to give a second lease of life. Light colours are best but can be checks or stripes, for example. Please make sure your item is clean so that wonderful blue is absorbed and gives you the best results.

  • 5/5 from Karen Turvey, attended Oct 2026: I did the indigo dyeing workshop yesterday at Reverse Garbage. I had no idea what to expect but it was so much fun! I loved that it was a small group - only 10 of us! Kirsten was our teacher and she was so warm, friendly, and encouraging and the hours flew by. It was a relaxing day but I also learned lots of techniques. The big reveal at the end was great and we were all excited to see how everyone's pieces turned out. I'd gifted this workshop to a friend for her birthday and we had such a lovely day together :)

It was a great space to work in and our teacher Kirsten made the day fun, interactive and informative - we really got into the techniques on our sample pieces and then got to the super fun part - the communal dye bath. Would thoroughly recommend this day for anyone wanting to try out techniques with a really knowledgeable teacher.
