My Story – Karen Nickels, Artist & Creative Workshop Facilitator
My love of art began early, inspired by my late grandmother, who was an accomplished artist. Today, as a South Australian practising artist and qualified secondary Art and Design teacher, I bring over 30 years of teaching experience in schools and privately to my creative workshops.
My art practice is driven by nature, travel and experimentation. I love combining acrylics, collage, charcoal, acrylic inks and gold leaf, embracing those unexpected “happy mistakes” that make creating so exciting. I believe art isn't about perfection; it's about curiosity, having a go and enjoying the process.
I'm the founder of Art Innovations and Create & Sip art experiences, offering creative workshops, wellbeing experiences and corporate team-building sessions. What I love most is seeing people surprise themselves, build confidence and discover the joy of creating in a relaxed, welcoming environment, regardless of their experience.
In 2022 and 2024, I founded and managed the Barossa Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of creativity across more than 50 venues throughout the Barossa, Light and Gawler regions. It featured an art trail, over 40 creative workshops, live music, food and wine events, and an Aboriginal cultural day.
With my background in teaching, tourism and event management, I love bringing art together with beautiful locations, local culture, food, wine and nature to create memorable experiences.
Looking ahead, I'm excited to expand my passion for creativity and wellbeing into creative wellness retreats in Bali and Thailand in 2027, combining art, cultural experiences, nature and time to relax and recharge.
Whether we're painting, lino printing or experimenting with mixed media, my aim is to help you step away from everyday pressures, connect with others and discover just how creative you can be. You don't need experience, just a willingness to give it a go!
I'd love to share the joy of creativity with you.
