Are you looking for fun things to do in Sydney this weekend? Why not try out this Chinese brush painting workshop at Sydney Community College and learn the skills to be able to create your own beautiful pieces of art that you can hang in your home!
In this class, you will be guided through the basic step-by-step process of creating a Chinese painting style piece of art by an expert artist. You will learn about the history of this style of art and the importance of motifs and composition used in traditional Chinese painting.
You'll then get to try out these techniques for yourself as you use ink on a scroll to create a beautiful masterpiece of a bird, flower, or landscape and incorporate symbolism and calligraphic elements too! Unleash your inner artist in this fun and relaxing environment and meet like-minded people too.
Course content:
  • The meaning behind the “four treasures” of Chinese brush painting
  • Structure and composition of a Chinese painting
  • The various Chinese paintbrushes and when to use them
  • Traditional Chinese calligraphic strokes
  • Applying a variety of lines on Sumi paper
  • Mixing tonal graduations

Please note:
If you wish to bring your brush, make sure to bring with you:
  • A 12-15" line brush (brown hair)
  • A colour brush (white hair)
  • A smaller line brush (brown hair)
  • A square Hake brush (white hair)
All students must be over 18+ years of age.

Knowledge required
This class is beginner-friendly, and more experienced painters are also welcome to come and practise basic skills too!
What to bring
  • Your own sketchbook and pen
  • Please make sure to wear enclosed shoes and wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty
  • Make sure to tie up long hair

Chi Lik Cheung


Chi Lik Cheung (Franz) is a noteworthy figure in Chinese Art History, specializing in Chinese calligraphy and painting. Franz was a Chinese Art History lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia for many years. In addition to his academic role, Cheung is actively engaged in various artistic endeavours and has a broad range of creative interests.

Cheung's artistic accomplishments have been recognized through various projects and collaborations. He co-authored the 2005 Australian landscape photo album "Tranquil Waters" with Ian Carlson, contributing his calligraphy work to the publication. Additionally, he was featured in the short film "4 Immeasurable," produced by filmmaker Keith Johnson in 2009, further showcasing his artistic talent.
Born in Hong Kong, Cheung now resides in Sydney, where he continues to pursue his artistic endeavours and share his knowledge and passion for Chinese art. He obtained a Master of Studio Art from the Sydney College of Art, a part of the University of Sydney (USYD). This educational background further strengthens his expertise in the field and informs his teaching and artistic practices.
