DIY Boro / Sashiko Zipper Pouch Craft Kit

Discover slow stitching and visible mending as you learn how to make your own boro/sashiko pouch with this DIY craft kit!

This kit contains all the basic materials you will need to make your very own and unique Boro (Japanese patchwork) pouch using Sashiko stitching (straight stitch embroidery). With this kit, you can make either a standing pouch or a flat wristlet. There are various colour combination kits available.

In your DIY craft kit, you will receive:

• Two pieces of outer fabric (linen or linen blend)
• Two pieces of lining (seeded cotton drill in natural)
• Boro patches in various shapes, sizes and fabrics (partially up-cycled)
• Two pieces of weft - a woven lightweight interfacing - fusible/iron-on (secures stitching)
• Two pieces of padded interfacing - fusible/iron-on (adds body)
• One 20cm (8”) silver metal zipper plus leather zipper pull
• Two 5cm (2”) square pieces of outer linen (zipper tabs)
• Two Sashiko needles plus 35 lengths of mixed colour cotton embroidery threads

Finished dimensions:

• Zipper pouch - 24cm (9 ½”) wide top, 16cm (6 ¼”) wide bottom, 14.5cm (5 3/4”) high, 6cm (2 ½”) box bottom
• Flat Wristlet - 24cm (9 ½”) wide, top and bottom, 18cm (7”) high

The hand-stitching is beginner-friendly, you will however need a sewing machine as well as some basic machine sewing skills to insert the zipper (or a friend that can help you with it).

Step by step detailed instructions (11 pages with photo illustrations) will assist you along the way. Not only will it teach you how to make your first Boro pouch, but it will also set you up with a few skills so that you can continue your slow-stitching and visible mending journey.

Each unique kit contains a curated selection of patches from a collection of vintage and new Japanese cotton, silk and linen fabrics. Chosen to match the linen base and complemented by coordinated cotton embroidery threads.
