The Douglas Snelling 'Low Chair' is a true Australian mid-century icon. It was designed by Snelling and made by Functional Products Pty Ltd in St Peters. The 'Snelling Line' was Australia's first popular, mass produced range of furniture sold widely through the major department stores from the late 1940s to the mid 1950s.
In this course, you’ll learn how to make a chair in the style of this historic design in Marrickville, a short distance away from the original workshop, under the instruction of an experienced cabinetmaker. Across the 3 day workshop you will construct a chair of your own using beautiful, locally sourced, reclaimed Australian hard wood and weave the webbing in a colour of your choice.
Looking for more? We also offer a 4-day version of the course, spread across two consecutive weekends, where students craft both an iconic chair and a matching footstool to complete the set. Please note this course is priced higher than the standard option — so take a moment to make sure you're choosing the right course for you before booking. When booking the dates that appear will be as if for a three day course (a correction we are unable to make currently on this platform) but rest assured the 4-day version of the course runs over 2 consecutive weekends beginning on the first date listed. Please feel free to reach out if you require further clarity.
This course is a great choice for those looking to expand their woodworking skills, get into making iconic and comfortable furniture, or challenge themselves a bit more and take their woodworking to the next level.
In this three day course students will make and construct the Snelling-style low chair (or low chair and stool if the 4 day course is chosen).
What we'll cover:
  • Knowledge and general safety in the workshop
  • You will learn how to effectively and safely use a variety of woodworking power tools
  • Learn how to use templates and jigs for template routing for accurate joinery
  • You will learn how to use a hand plane and spoke shave to shape parts
  • You will learn how to use a domino machine to attach the parts
  • You will learn to use a router table to round over parts
  • You will sand and finish the parts
  • You will learn how to attach the webbing for the chair and stool

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 5 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
