Anyone can learn to draw. This short course teaches you the foundational skills for drawing anything.

4 x 2 hours

Class size 1 to 4 (public classes), 1 to 6
$360 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

In this four-week drawing course for beginners, you'll learn foundational drawing techniques and pick up introductory skills to help you draw anything.
Week 1. Observational Drawing — All things can be broken down into their essential geometric shapes: spheres, cones, cylinders, and cubes. Once you learn to draw them, you can draw anything. In week 1, we learn to draw simple objects made of 2 or 3 basic shapes and explore the way light and shade fall on those objects.
Week 2. Proportion and Composition
In this class, we explore:
  • The elements of design and composition
  • Creating compositions, learning how to arrange elements and guide the viewer's eye
  • Constructing a still life using the basic geometric shapes explored in week one to create a compelling composition
  • Discussing the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio theories
  • Learning how to use underlying structures to create movement and compositional cohesion
Week 3. Perspective
In this class, we:
  • Make drawings using one and two-point perspective
  • Learn to create the illusion of depth and space on paper
  • Discuss and experiment with horizon lines, vanishing points, and eye level
  • Develop observational skills and spatial awareness so you can draw believable places, architecture, and objects
  • May do some of this class outdoors (weather permitting)
Week 4. Expressive Drawing
In this very experimental class, we:
  • Experiment with different materials — including charcoal, crayon, coloured pencil, brush and ink, etc.
  • Experiment with the emotion of line — thinking about line weight, thickness, and movement, etc.
  • Experiment with mark making — for example: what are the marks made by a spider's feet as opposed to an elephant's? What are the marks that could be left by someone experiencing joy, calm, anger, sadness, etc.?
  • Explore the shapes to express emotions — are they round, jagged, large, small, lumpy, smooth?
  • Combine your experiments — You create a composition of the emotion and experiment with combining line, marks, and shape
  • Create contour drawings of faces
  • Create multiple view drawings — showing 2 or 3 perspectives of another person's face
  • Draw to music — with our eyes closed
  • Create new compositions — using your favourite elements from the experiments you've made.
