Hand Embroidery Class for Absolute Beginners

Learn everything you need to create something beautiful using needle and thread

4 hours Class size 1 to 4

label $180 - $190 (or 4 payments of $45 - $47.50 Afterpay)
($190 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $180 for 2+ guests)

In this fun embroidery class, we will be diving straight into the world of thread and colour as you learn an ancient skill that you can use to update or create something new.

Learn how to express yourself using needles and thread. Humans have used this ancient art form for millennia - and now you can use it too.

We'll begin the class with some basic colour theory and explore the different types of stitches. During the course, you will learn the basic stitches you need to use in various ways, e.g. Sashiko, Boro, painting with thread, and many more!

This session is a hands-on experience, and your teacher Narda will be there to help and answer any questions you might have.

You will go home with your hand-stitched piece plus skills to embellish your clothes, homewares, and more. You will also have access to Narda's textile and design library.

This short workshop is also great for those doing textiles for their HSC and who would like to explore design options.

You can request a personal class at no extra cost. All of Narda's classes are one to one or small groups of friends, so when you book, you will be able to ask as many questions as you like.

Workshops in the Blue Mountains are also available by request.

Add-on available for this class
  • Extra sessions ($55)
You can add these when you book (optional).

A fibre artist, designer, teacher, and history nut, I am fascinated by all forms of colour and pattern in daily life as an expression of culture and identity.

I love teaching and sharing what I know, helping people to stretch their skills, create new experiences & explore their own creativity.

I firmly believe there is no such thing as a non-creative person.
Everyone has the potential to be creative.
It could be in cooking, gardening, interior design, writing or as in my case - FIBRE arts.

As a teacher with 30 years experience, I get a real buzz when a student who hasn't tried a specific craft before - not only masters it, but becomes excited by the ways they can use their new skill.

I started in Jewellery design when I was in my early 20's, then discovered that all the things I love to do (design, dye, draw, felt, paint, etc) could be used in the practice of 'Hand or Surface Embroidery'.

I taught the 'Foundation course' in Colour & Design at the International School of Colour & Design.

I am a published textile designer & also run week-long textile experiences in Tasmania every January.
I have exhibited many of my pieces in a variety of spaces & had one piece auctioned off to raise money for the Embroiderers Guild of NSW.

My influences come from various parts of history both ancient and modern, the natural world (especially birds & fish) & the written word.
I love to read.
I collect folktales & poetry.
These interests often show up in my work - in quotes or images inspired by what I've read.

I bring all of these experiences & interests to my teaching of Hand Embroidery & encourage students to explore the potential of this ancient art form.

The same can be said of my other design practices - wirework, up-cycling clothing & free form crochet + knitting.
I also teach spinning - I dye & spin my own yarn.

Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

What a wonderful class . Narda is an excellent teacher. She has a very easy and warm personal style, and in a one on one setting, it was a great way to relax and learn and practice. She also gave me some written materials and a generous kit to take home. And a morning tea to die for !

Narda was amazing! Loved her tutorial and her home! So cozy and beautiful ambience with books and Jazz music playing in the background. Narda was so patient and polite and extremely supportive in teaching me the basics of hand embroidery and in the course, introducing me to art history as well. She is highly learned and skilled in her craftsmanship and her communication skill is excellent. She provided me with all the materials needed and a start up kit as well! She also baked a chocolate cake and made special Darjeeling Tea for me and the warmth and hospitality made my experience as a beginner truly memorable and truly worth it. She is brilliant!

Participated in the beginners hand embroidery workshop with Narda Campbell and had a great time. We were taught the fundamentals of different stitches which set up the basis for practically any embroidery design. We were taught good technique and also posture, as well as a bit of history around embroidery and uses of the stitches. Narda created little beginners kits for us with useful handouts, different coloured floss, a vial of needles, and other great supplies. Everything we needed to participate was supplied during the workshop, and she also prepared a gorgeous little cake and tea for us to enjoy together. The venue was easy to find and pleasant to work in: calm, cosy, well lit, and nice atmosphere. Narda herself was kind, funny, patient, and obviously passionate about her crafts, and was inspiring. I left the workshop so excited about designing some projects for myself. Really glad I came along to this and would highly recommend to others!

This embroidery class was lovely. It was an unexpected intimate one-on-one workshop with Narda where I learnt the basics of embroidery at her beautiful home. The time really flew by and it often felt more like friends having a chat over tea, brownies, and crafting than a strict lesson. Narda was very patient and her passion for all things crafty was apparent from the outset. Her examples of different techniques and displays of her own works was extremely helpful as a beginner as I learn best visually and was able to not only see but also touch the patterns with my hands to analyse the way it was done. Wonderful teacher and workshop; would highly recommend for anyone who learns better in less structured, more free-form lessons. Thank you Narda!
