Hand Painting with Indigo Workshop

Discover the beauty of indigo and hand-paint your own set of linen napkins in this joyful festive workshop

4 hours Location St Peters Class size 1 to 14 guests   $160 (Afterpay available)

Join the always-inspiring Cath Derksema from The Happenstore for a hands-on morning of creativity, colour and discovery as you explore the magic of indigo dye and learn how to create your own original hand-painted linen napkins.
You’ll make a beautiful set of four linen napkins (50 × 50 cm) — perfect as handmade gifts (although you may just want to keep them for yourself!). Using brush-painting techniques, Cath will guide you through ways to create patterns, marks and tones that capture the beauty and spontaneity of indigo dyeing.
You’ll also receive 1 litre of indigo dye to work with during the session, along with all tools and materials provided. Expect to experiment freely, play with pattern and form, and be amazed at the scope of what you can achieve — even simple dots and brushstrokes look fabulous!
Cath will have extra napkins and tea towels available for purchase on the day if you’d like to keep creating.
Don’t wear your best clothes — indigo has a way of finding itself on fabric! We’ll have plenty of aprons available, but it’s best to wear an old shirt as well, just in case.
What you will learn:
  • How to hand-paint fabric using indigo dye and simple mark-making techniques
  • Tips for working with indigo safely and confidently
  • Ways to experiment with pattern, texture and tonal variation
  • How to create a cohesive set of hand-painted napkins for display or gifting

  • 5/5 from Tina Goodall, attended Nov 2025: I LOVED IT! IT was 4 hours of learning to paint with Indigo...taught by the lovely knowledgeable Cath! My granddaughter & I drove from the Sth H'lands, went too far in the M8, for us it was a ridiculously hot sweaty day, and NOW, I finally know what I want to do to my napkins...paint all over them with the Indigo, we were gifted! What will be the result, I ponder! Can't wait but have other duties staring at me!! No time for photos!! X

  • 5/5 from Debra Hinton, attended Nov 2025: Cath clearly has a passion for textile arts and has a wealth of knowledge which she shared generously. It was amazing to see all the different designs each student came up with on the day. It is such a lot of fun playing with indigo dye and bleach to transform plain table napkins into works of art! I am keen to try painting with colours now!
  • 5/5 from Philippa Blaxill, attended Nov 2025: I’ve done a few classes with Cath and she is a very special person. She is so generous with her knowledge and is super inspiring and encouraging. Rebecca has created a wonderful space to hold workshops. We all need more like this in our lives. Thank you.

Made by Me Workshop is about helping people to connect with their "inner creative" and have some fun while making beautiful things from quality materials in our friendly & vibrant studio space in the heart of the inner west!
Established in 2017 after Rebecca Doyle decided to take a career break and chose to revisit her childhood love for arts & crafts. Rebecca grew up in a large family where money was tight, after school activities where mostly homegrown and usually involved a sheet of cardboard, a glue stick and some glitter! It is probably no surprise to learn that Rebecca followed a creative path to study Fashion & Textile Design at University!
After a few more decades (than Rebecca will publicly admit to) and a long and varied career in the fashion industry, Rebecca wanted to get back to creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind objects - Made By Me Workshop is the result of where this path led.
Rebecca loves that moment of pride that comes over each participant's face when they look at what they have created and say to themselves "Wow - I made this & I love it!"
Made by Me Workshop run a variety of creative workshops, hen’s parties, private parties and corporate events from their warehouse space in St Peters including Resin Art, Resin Jewellery & Mould Making, Soap Making, Terrazzo Homewares, Punch Needle, Macrame and many more.
