Intro to Tango: Beginners Tango Course

4 x 1 hour Location Paddington Class size 2 guests   $80 (Afterpay available)

Always wanted to try tango but figured you'd need a partner, or two left feet would give you away? Good news: neither matters here!
Sydney Tango Collective is a community-run Argentine tango school in Paddington, and this course is built for complete beginners. Over five Tuesday evenings, you'll learn the foundations that make tango feel like tango: the embrace, walking together to the music, and the small, quiet signals one dancer uses to invite and the other to respond. Each week builds on the last, so by the end, you'll be dancing, not just doing steps.
We rotate partners throughout every class, so you'll dance with lots of people. That's the easiest way to learn and the quickest way to meet people. Most people arrive a little nervous and leave laughing.
It's tango as it's danced socially in Buenos Aires: improvised, connected, and much more of a hug than a performance.
Your first class is free, so the $80 covers five weeks of tango for the price of four.
What you'll learn:
  • The tango embrace: how to connect with a partner comfortably
  • Walking to the music, which is the foundation of every tango move
  • Leading and following basics (try either role, or both)
  • Simple sequences you can put together and actually dance
  • A taste of tango music and the culture around it
Who it's for:
  • Complete beginners. Zero dance experience is totally fine
  • Solo dancers, couples, friends, and dates
  • Anyone after a new hobby, a fun weeknight, or a way to meet people in Sydney
Where:
Paddington Uniting Church Hall, 2 Newcombe st, Paddington NSW 2021. Our home is a beautiful heritage hall with a big timber dance floor, right on Oxford Street (Door entry is on Newcombe st side)
What you'll get
  • 4 x 60-minute weekly classes with STC's teaching team (+ introductory first FREE class)
  • Rotating partners, so you never need to bring one
  • A welcoming, low-pressure group of other beginners
What to bring
  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • Shoes with a smooth sole that can pivot on a wooden floor (leather soles or worn sneakers work well; avoid grippy runners)
  • A water bottle
Session repeats

This class series runs over 4 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
