Introductory Blacksmithing Workshop

Learn the fundamental techniques of blacksmithing and forge a project or two on the day

6 hours Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 3 to 5

label $349 - $379 (or 4 payments of $87.25 - $94.75 Afterpay)
($379 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $349 for 2+ guests)

Come and spend a Saturday with us in this practical introduction to blacksmithing and go home with your very own hand-forged projects! This Sydney workshop is perfect for beginners.

During this full-day workshop, you will experience shaping your own project with hammer and fire, as well as learn a bit about the blacksmith forge, anvil, and tools and techniques used in blacksmithing. You will make a bottle opener and then have the freedom to select your own project, like a fire poker, s-hook or refine your bottle opener game by making some more.

What's included in this workshop:

  • A blacksmithing overview including the tools, processes and a safety briefing.
  • All materials required (steel, hammers, tongs, anvil, gas forge, PPE).
  • Forging your own project with hammer and fire.
  • Access to steel, forge and anvil for other projects on the day as you wish
  • All instructions and support required on the day.
  • Lunch from a local cafe (poke bowl, salad or burger and drink).

How the workshop will run:
The day starts with a safety briefing and then we discuss what it takes to get into blacksmithing as a hobby. This includes the tools required, where to source materials, safe working practises and an overview of the project of the day. We then all make the same project to get everyone comfortable before you can branch out and make something else, for instance, a fire poker or another bottle opener.

Please note:
This is not a knife-making workshop but a more relaxed introduction to blacksmithing where you learn about the tools and processes while still get to make a project or two on the day.
- The workshop will be held in the back yard of our location in Brookvale, Northern Beaches Sydney. This is an industrial setting outside, under roof with basic facilities.
  • Lunch break will be from noon to 1 pm and there are several cafes in the area, as well as two craft breweries within a five-minute walk (Nomad Brewery and 4 Pines Brewery) but there will no alcohol permitted until after any sharp tools are put away.
  • We will aim to let you do as much as possible of this yourself. If you get tired of the hammering and we have to assist, we may have to help you with some decisions on how to complete your project, in order to finish on time.

Knowledge required
No prior experience needed but some physical strength is required to complete the project. Anyone able to lift a one-kilogram hammer over the head and hammer "for a while" (we will help if you get tired).

You must be able over 16-years-old and be able to follow basic safety instructions as provided by your instructor who is with you every step of the way.
What you'll get
  • Hands-on experience with blacksmithing and bring home your own completed project.
  • We will provide leather blacksmith aprons and suitable eye and ear protection.
What to bring
  • We recommend wearing full-length pants and sleeves in 100% cotton or wool and closed-toe shoes on the day.
  • Please bring gloves and hearing protection and dust musk if not wanting to use our provided PPE. - Expect to get hit by some sparks or hot scale which is not dangerous but might be a surprise the first time, (long sleeves and pants is the way to go).

Awesome experience and Jamie was a great teacher. Managed to finish the bottle opener with time to spare and with Jamie's help made a Viking arm ring for my daughter that fits!

It was a fabulous experience, learning a unique and ancient art. But what really made it great was the kindness of the staff, Bjørn and Tim.

Great teacher interesting background info stories. Great step by step instructions and then is happy to let you be independent. Would have liked more time to complete little independent projects but on the other hand too exhausted to do so on same day! Do you have follow up continuers course? I mean another day of forging for those who have already done the intro?

I booked my 16yo son into this course. He didn't stop raving about how good it was and how the instructors were the nicest people he'd ever encountered.
We'll be booking him back in for the next available course!
