Discover the beauty of traditional Japanese decorative knots in this relaxing, hands-on workshop.
You'll learn to create a unique accessory using mizuhiki, a colourful, tightly-twisted paper cord traditionally used in Japan for gift wrapping and celebrations.
In this beginner-friendly class, you'll be introduced to one of the most fundamental mizuhiki designs: the Awaji knot, which symbolises lasting relationships and longevity. After a few practice rounds, you'll decide whether to make a pair of earrings or a key/bag charm, depending on what feels right for you. Both options are included in the session.
Along the way, you’ll also learn about the tradition and history of mizuhiki, adding depth and cultural meaning to your experience.
No prior experience is needed! Saki will guide you step-by-step, sharing not only techniques but also the symbolism behind each knot. The design you’ll create represents harmony, making your finished piece not only beautiful but also meaningful.
You’ll leave with a handcrafted accessory and a new appreciation for this calming, mindful Japanese art form.
All materials are provided, and the class is suitable for both adults and teens.
Come along for a creative break, a taste of Japanese culture, and a keepsake to wear or gift!
What you'll get
A beautiful pair of earrings or a key/bag charm, handcrafted by you using the Awaji knot, one of the most fundamental and symbolic knots in Japanese Mizuhiki art.

Hi, I’m Saki, the hands behind Knot 'n Knot. I’m a Mizuhiki artist based in Hornsby, NSW, and I run workshops to share this beautiful Japanese craft with others.
I’ve always loved making things, but when I first tried Mizuhiki, something just clicked. I was drawn in by the soothing process of tying each knot and the deeper meaning behind every design—wishes for happiness, love, and long-lasting connections. That quiet beauty, mixed with tradition, made me fall in love with the craft. Creating Mizuhiki helps me feel connected to my Japanese roots, and it's become a gentle, joyful part of my life.
What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing people light up when they try something new. It’s such a joy to share the excitement I feel about Mizuhiki and watch it spread. Whether you're here to relax, learn a new skill, or simply make something beautiful, I aim to make the experience fun, welcoming, and meaningful.
In my workshops, I don’t just teach technique—I also love sharing the stories behind Mizuhiki: the traditions, customs, and symbolism that make it more than just a craft. My background in education (both in Japan and Australia) helps me tailor classes to different ages and learning styles, so everyone feels comfortable and supported.
Whether you're completely new to Mizuhiki or just curious, I’d love to welcome you to a workshop and help you create something truly special.
