What you'll do
Our kids courses are the perfect opportunity for kids and their parents or guardians to work together, learn some woodworking skills, and take something beautiful and handmade home.
Each course looks at the properties and history of timber, the value of sustainability and recycled materials, and using hand woodworking tools in a safe and supportive environment.
Our kids courses include:
- A 4 hour noughts and crosses course for ages 8-12.
- A 4 hour timber toy car making course for ages 8-12.
- A 2 x 4 hour session timber pencil box making course for ages 8-12.
- A 1 day step stool course. This is the same course as our all-ages step stool course but only for children 10-15 and their parents or guardians.
We host a range of kids courses, both as part of our course calendar and for group bookings, eg. for homeschooling groups. If you'd like to book a group session, get in touch!
Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 7 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

Knowledge required
This course is for people with little to no experience with woodwork looking for an introduction to the craft. We have designed this course with kids in mind, and it is open to kids of all skill levels, including those who have never done woodwork before.
What you'll get
By the end of this woodwork course, you and your kids should have:- An appreciation of the value of second-hand timber
- The knowledge to safely and effectively use some simple hand tools under supervision
- Been introduced to a range of woodworking terminology
- Used a number of woodworking devices and jigs
- Made your own timber project together
What to bring
- You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, protective eyewear and ear protection however sanitised Personal Protective Equipment will be available to use. Any borrowed PPE needs to be sanitised after use
- You are required to wear closed-toe shoes
- Aprons will be provided but please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust or glue)
- Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn
- For your own safety, facilitator instructions regarding the correct use of tools and equipment must be followed at all times

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.Â
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.Â

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.Â
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.
